Box Score (Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team battled to the wire at Washington College, scoring in the final seconds to force overtime before suffering a 92-91 heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon.
Much like the women's game prior, the teams came out ready to put some points on the board as the hosts hit a late three-pointer to put Washington up 40-31 at halftime.
Senior Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) had a great start for the Red Devils, netting nine points to go with five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Travis Dobbins (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) hit 3-of-5 shots for nine points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
Washington hit a three-pointer to break an 8-8 deadlock and would build the lead to as many as eight in the opening half. The Red Devils kept answering when the Shoremen looked to pull away, playing even at 20-20 at the midpoint.
The Shoremen put together a 10-2 run and led by nine at the break with Daniel Brown leading the way with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Washington stretched the lead to 15 in the second half before the Red Devils looked to make a run at the midpoint of the half.
Allen led the way with Dobbins adding offense as well. Allen buried a huge three-pointer to pull the Red Devils even, 72-72, with 4:40 remaining in the game. The Shoremen kept trying to pull away but Dickinson would keep coming.
Washington led 80-76 with less than a minute to play. KJ Holton (Clinton, Md./DeMatha) hit a big jumper before a free throw put the hosts in front by three with just seconds remaining in regulation.
Jack Tierney (Darien, Conn./Darien) was wide open under the basket and quickly converted to cut the deficit to one with 8.9 seconds on the clock. Derrick Carr hit one of two but Holton drove the length of the floor and scored to send the game into overtime.
Holton dropped a pair of free throws to put Dickinson up, 89-86, with less than three minutes to play in overtime. Chris Bates (Ellicott City, Md./Boys' Latin) countered a lay-up with two free throws to keep Dickinson up by three.
Washington cut the margin to just one and held on defense to set up a final possession. Tierney turned away a baseline jumper with a huge block with 15 seconds to play.
Brown followed a miss with a tip-in to put Washington on top. The Red Devils were forced to take to a half court that was off the mark.
Allen finished with 24 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists, going 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Allen is just the seventh player in program history to record seven steals in a game. Dobbins tallied 19 points and Holton added 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
First-year Mark Bowditch (Milton, Wisc./IMG Academy) gave the Devils some solid minutes, adding nine points. Tierney had six points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Red Devils slip to 2-15 overall and 2-8 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm.
