Box Score 2 (Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team opened the 2020 season on Sunday, traveling to Millersville University for a double-header with Lebanon Valley College. The teams split the series with the Dutchmen taking the opening and the Red Devils countering with a 6-5 decision in the nightcap.
The Dutchmen rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim game on, 5-1. Kyle Kingsbury earned the win in a two-hit effort, going 4.1 innings while allowing one earned run.
Senior Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) did most of the damage for the Red Devils, launching a solo homerun in the top of the second inning.
Pat Harrington (Long Valley, N.J./Delbarton) had the other hit for the Red Devils and added a stolen base. Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn Charter) and Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) each drew a pair of walks.
Sophomore Beau Dana (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) had a strong start on the hill in his debut for the Red Devils, going four scoreless innings while scattering three hits and recording nine strikeouts.
Dickinson jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the second of game two. Matilsky walked, moved over on a single from Cole Hare (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and came in to score on an error off the bat of Delsandro.
Tom Gannaway (Westfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) came through with a two-RBI single to score Delsandro and Hare.
The Dutchmen answered with a pair of runs in the third and pulled in front 5-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Red Devils came back with three in the top of fifth to regain the lead, 6-5. Gannaway got things started with a single and a stolen base to set up and RBI double from Cohen.
Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) doubled to score Cohen before Matilsky came through once again, doubling in Reilly for the game ahead and eventual game-winning run.
Jake Geddes (Darien, Conn./Darien) earned the win while Marcus Thompson (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Trabuco Hills) added a save, recording six strikeouts in three hit-less innings to close out the game.
Gannaway led the way at the plate in game two, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Red Devils start the season 1-1. They travel to Marymount University for a double-header on Saturday before returning to host a double-header with Juniata on Sunday in the home opener.
