Red Devils Win Streak Halted at Four

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Dickinson volleyball team saw their four-game winning streak halted on Friday night as they fell in straight sets to the host Stevenson University Mustangs on day one of the Stevenson Classic at Owings Mills Gym. The Red Devils struggled all night on the attack posting a -.009 hitting percentage, while Stevenson hit a solid .214.

Dickinson fell behind 3-0 in the first set, before a service error got them on the board. Unfortunately, Stevenson won the next three to jump up 6-1. A kill by Jenna Schumann and blocks from Morgan Biggs and Emma Lange trimmed the gap to 8-5. The rest of the game belonged to the Mustangs as they closed on a 17-5 run with Red Devil points coming from Hanna Riley, Biggs, and Lange.

Dessie Anne Nietert got the guests out to a 1-0 lead on a solo block, but that was quickly answered by five straight from Stevenson. The trio of Biggs Lange and Schumann chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within 9-8. A Lange kill accounted for the only Red Devils point during a 8-1 charge for the hosts to grab a 17-9 advantage. Dickinson took advantage of five consecutive Mustangs miscues to close the gap to 17-14. However, the home side scored the ensuing eight points for the win.

Stevenson seized control of the third set right out of the blocks storming out to a 10-0 edge. Hanna Riley, Alexa Barowski and Christina Chu responded with a 5-1 push to make it 11-5. After two home points, the Red Devils rallied back in a big way as Lange, Riley and Schumann organized a 10-4 sprint to level the score at 15-15. Over the next ten points the game was on a seesaw with the two teams exchanging scores to stay level 20-20. Three straight Stevenson kills built a lead that the Devils could not fight back from as Biggs recorded to kills to make it 24-22, before the hosts closed out the match.
