UPSET ACCOMPLISHED! Devils Knock Off No. 11 Garnet

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team showed true grit and determination all day on the defensive end of the floor while doing just enough offensively to earn a 52-48 home win over No. 11 Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon at the Kline Center. The Devils were led by 11 points of the bench by Andrew Gostovich and 10 from Chris Bates.

With the victory, the Red and Black snapped their six-game skid and handed the Garnet their first Centennial Conference loss since January 19, 2019. Swat was limited to just 26.6% from the floor going just 17-64 which marked the first time they had been held under 30% from the floor since January 30, 2016, when Johns Hopkins kept them at 23.9%.

Dickinson began the game strong with Anthony Goeb, Ryan Robinson, and Jack Tierney all scoring inside the opening five minutes to take a 7-2 lead. Aidan Godfrey dropped a shot from distance and Michael Caprise finished at the rim to cut the margin down to 9-7 a minute later. A Robinson layup extended the gap to 11-7, before six straight by Caprise put the Garnet in front 13-11 with 9:55 to go. After another Godfrey triple made it 16-11. DC charged back with a 6-0 Bates run to reclaim a 17-16 advantage. Swat fought back to go ahead 20-17 before layups by Bates and Tierney sent the Red and Black to a 21-20 edge. The visitors tried to build up momentum heading to the break as George Visconti knocked down two threes and Caprise added a layup for a 28-21 lead. Goeb converted two foul shots prior to the horn to make it 28-23 at half.

The Devils came flying out of the break going on a 7-2 run with Goeb, Gostovich, and Tierney all finding the bottom of the net to tie the score at 30-30 five minutes in. A bucket by Luke Spellman and a three-ball from Gostovich helped DC to go back ahead 35-34 with 13:07 remaining. Visconti hit on a pull-up jumper the next time down the floor to make it 36-35 Garnet. However, that seemed to spark the Red and Black as Gostovich buried two shots from downtown, while Drew Haueisen added a tough layup inside to give the home side a 43-38 advantage. Free throws by Caprise and Visconti pulled the Garnet even at 45-45, before Abass Sallah gave them the lead with a tough runner in the lane. The next trip down the court Robinson drilled a triple, followed by a Bates layup to jump ahead 50-47 at the 15:40 mark. Over the next four minutes, the well went dry for both teams as they combined to go 0-9 with two turnovers. Goeb cashed in twice on the line with 37-seconds left to make it 52-47 and Caprise added one foul shot for the final.
