HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Dickinson field hockey team got a third quarter goal from
Abby Marthins to tie the game at 1-1, but gave up the eventual game winner less than ten minutes later to allow the host Haverford College to leave Swan Field with a 2-1 Centennial Conference win.
Dickinson recorded the first shot of the match 2:30 into the contest, but the offering from A. Marthins did not test Mary Smith in the Fords cage. Consecutive attempts by Olivia Ahart off of back-to-back penalty corners never made it to
Saige Stevens in goal. However, with ten minutes off the clock Zoey Despines and Amy Kim were both blocked by the Devils defense, but Naomi York was able to find Kim for the finish and the 1-0 lead after one.
It took just 90-seconds into the second for the Red and White to let a shot fly, unfortunately the attempt by A. Marthins was cancelled out by the defense. In the 25th minute Kim went in search of her second of the day, but this time Stevens was up to the task. DC had their best chance to pull level with 25:12 off the clock as
Morgan Yandow-Harding had a shot slide past Smith in goal, however, Lexie Streicher prevented the ball from crossing the line as she swept it away from trouble sending the game to the half.
Dickinson applied the early pressure in the third with
Becca Woods having her blast turned away by Smith, before A. Marthins cashed in for the visitors off a nice feed from
Maggie Carson to knot the score at 1-1 at the 5:08 mark of the frame. After that point Haverford flipped the momentum recording the ensuing four shots with Stevens having to stop all of them. Then, with 44-seconds left in the period Delaney Snowden slid a pass to Holly Vincent who tapped it in for the 2-1 advantage heading to the fourth.Â
With 10:16 elapsed in the final period
Abby Hill tried to bring DC on level terms, but Smith was up to the task. The next two shots went to the Fords as Ahart and Despines had their attempts snuffed out by the Devils backline. In the final two minutes Dickinson had two penalty corners and got shots from
Natalie Slusser and Woods, unfortunately, Smith had the answer to both closing out the game.
