BALTIMORE - Saul Iwowo tallied goals in the 29th and 84th minutes to help the sixth-seeded Dickinson men's soccer team force overtime at 2-2 against the third-seeded Johns Hopkins University in the first round of the Centennial Conference tournament at Historic Homewood Field. However, the Red and White were done in by penalty kicks 4-2 to have their season come to an end.
The first 14 minutes went by with both sides trying to find their footing as neither team was able to record a shot. At the 14:04 mark Hopkins got the first attempt when Logan Falzarano clipped the ball over Devils keeper Andrew Kempe. Dickinson made their opening look at frame count during the 29th as Andrew McSlarrow won the ball in the center of the pitch off a Blue Jays defender. The loose ball found Chaz Smith who played a fantastic through ball to Saul Iwowo that led to a one-on-one opportunity against goalie Alex Morgret which he slotted under the keeper into the net for the 1-0 lead with 28:34 off the clock. Hopkins then went on the attack as Ian Whamond was stopped by Kempe, before a foul in the box on Chris Hackley resulted in a penalty kick for Francis Meyer that was converted for the tie two minutes later. The teams traded shots over the next six minutes with Will Sangpachatanaruk forcing Kempe into a stop, while Johnny Diederich had a header pushed to the side off a corner by Morgret. In the 43rd, DC had an opportunity from about 25-yards out, but Tyson Burling put the shot right into the chest of the goalie. With ten-seconds to go in the period Hop had a chance to grab the lead, however, Jackson Shapiro missed just high.
Both teams tallied shots within the opening five minutes of the second half as Hopkins Tyler White ripped one to the right, before Iwowo launched one from distance that Morgret handled easily. The Jays immediately went back on the attack with Axel Whamond making Kempe turn him away, prior to White sailing one over the head of the keeper. The Devils offered some push back in the 55th when Alessandro Forero had a shot blocked down by the defense. The Red and White showed off some solid defense during the 57th as a bouncing ball inside the 18-yard box led to one save from Kempe and an errant offering by Whamond. However, the Blue Jays did find the go-ahead marker with a half-hour remaining as Whamond made a strong run down the left side prior to playing a perfectly weighted pass into Jonathan Cui who finished in the lower-right corner. Hopkins tried to make it 3-1 right away, but Mike Burch was shutdown by Kempe. The Devils had a prime opportunity at the 65:17 mark, unfortunately Burling skied an open look off the right-wing. In the 83rd, the Red and White were turned aside from point-blank once again as Burling had an attempt punched away by Morgret. However, the Devils did find the equalizer just over a minute later as Iwowo completed the brace. The Jays threw everything at the Devils inside the final 60-seconds with three corners and one free kick, but did not find the winner.
Each team recorded just one shot in the first ten-minute overtime period as Luke Beiles was stopped by Morgret in the 95th, while Whamond let one fly from around 35-yards at the horn which did not bother Kempe. The same was true in the second stanza with Geoffrey Ogenrwot going wide left during the 109th, before Lech Dunser tested Kempe with 29-ticks left.
