Tough Second Half Gets No. 19 Spartans Past Devils

CLEVELAND - The Dickinson men's basketball team held their own over the opening 20 minutes against the 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University trailing by just one at halftime on Saturday in the Championship Game of the Bill Sudeck Tournament. However, the host Spartans outscored the Red and White by ten in the second period to secure the 71-60 win.

The two teams traded the opening ten points of the game with Randy Shephard knocking down two at the line and Drew Haueisen buried a shot from long-range. Three minutes later Daniel Florey scored in the paint to make it 7-5, but then a triple by Brandon Wiercinski along with layups from Aaron Bailey and Martin Mann gave DC a 12-9 lead with 12:58 to go in the first. A 7-0 Spartans run with four points coming from Luke Thorburn pushed Case Western in front 16-12, but the Red and White responded with six in a row from Anthony Goeb, Luke Spellman, and Mann moved the Devils back ahead 18-16 with 11 minutes off the clock. A bucket by Danny Frauenheim ended a 7-2 stretch for the home side giving them a 23-20 advantage with just over three minutes to go. A jumper for Goeb, two free throws from Matt Smith, along with a triple out of the hands of Skyler Venezia helped DC to reclaim a 27-25 edge. Frauenheim tallied the final three points of the period to give Case the 28-27 lead going to the break.

Six points by Mann coupled with a jumper from Andrew Gostovich had Dickinson on top 35-32 with three-and-a-half mintues gone in the second. The trio of Cole Frilling, Umar Rashid, and Frauenheim organized an 11-3 charge for the Spartans to get them the 43-38 lead. Two shots at the charity line by Bailey stunted the Case run for a moment, before a three for Frilling sparked a 9-2 push by the hosts ending on a Frauenheim layup (52-42) with just over eight minutes remaining. The Red and White continued to try and chip away at the deficit with buckets from Isaiah Edmond, Bailey, Gostovich, and Mann trimming the margin to 59-52. A pair Venezia treys kept Dickinson within reach at 65-58 with exactly two minutes to play. The Spartans went six-for-six at the line down the stretch to close out the game at 71-60.
