CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's swimming team needed to finish first and third in the final race of the afternoon to finish off the upset of the rival Franklin & Marshall College Diplomats. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they landed in second and fourth to allow the visitors to escape with a 138-123 Centennial Conference win on Saturday afternoon at the Clarke Aquatic Center.
The Devils began the day strong as the unit of
Olivia Abbott-Havers, Bella Gerkin, Isabel McGovern, and
Sarah McHenry posted a time of 1:53.97 for a second-place result. Dickinson also took up fifth thanks to
Margot Armstrong, Sydney Farling, Emma Johnston, and
Norah Wilson at 2:00.77.
Caroline Christianson earned the first win of the day for DC by stopping the clock in 11:09.04 during the 1000-yard freestyle. Annelyse Warner came in fourth with a mark of 12:20.02.
Abbott-Havers continued her strong season in the freestyle events by winning the 200-yard at 1:57.64, while Christianson and
Carrington Bowles took up fourth (2:05.36) and seventh (2:14.35) respectively.
Two members of the Red and White found the podium in the 100-yard backstroke as McHenry clocked in at 1:03.29 to win the event, before Tori May posted a time of 1:03.57 for third. Isobell O'Connell came in sixth (1:06.67) and
Julia Ciesielka earned eighth (1:10.49).
Gerkin occupied the final podium spot during the 100-yard breaststroke by hitting the wall in 1:12.97, followed by Farling in fifth (1:14.89) and
Cate Lord in seventh (1:20.67).
The biggest moment of the day came in the 200-yard butterfly when McGovern broke the school record for the event that had stood for the last 33 years with a time of 2:09.58. Dickinson also took up second through fourth thanks to Johnston (2:15.50),
Sarah Mulcahy (2:19.00), and Molly Tate (2:23.96).
The Devils continued the day by winning the 50-yard freestyle with
Caroline Wasielevski posting a time 25.63. Wilson grabbed fourth (26.13), while
Margie Winter and
Margaux Reyna took up sixth (27.42) and seventh (28.41) respectively.
Abbott-Havers won her second event of the meet as her time of 54.02 was good enough to hold off the Diplomats Julie McFadden and her 54.37. Wasielevski stayed inside the Top-5 by hitting the wall in 57.84 for fourth.
May led the way during the 200-yard backstroke by stopping the clock in 2:14.99, while McHenry added a third-place finish at 2:19.45.
Christianson was three seconds off the pace in the 500-yard freestyle as her mark of 5:28.98 was good for third. Warner (5:50.56) and Tate (6:05.36) also competed in the event.
McGovern won her second butterfly race of the afternoon by besting the field in the 100-yard by hitting the wall in 58.58. Armstrong landed on the podium as well for the Red and White finishing third in 1:04.00.
A pair of first-years posted Top-3 times in the 200-yard individual medley with Johnston taking second in 2:16.35, followed by May in third at 2:22.05.
In the decisive race of the meet the 200-yard freestyle relay the team of Abbott-Havers, Christianson, McGovern, and Wasielevski finished in 1:40.45, but were edged out at the line by the Diplomats who clocked in at 1:40.18. Dickinson also earned a fourth-place result thanks to Armstrong, Farling, O'Connell, and Wilson who hit the wall in 1:46.80.
