CARLISLE, Pa. - Sophomore
Clair Marion dropped a career-high 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds and handing out three assists to help the Red and White lead wire-to-wire in their 66-54 home opening win over the visiting Moravian University on Wednesday night at the Kline Center.
Both teams traded early turnovers, before
Mia Kolb,
Gina Neigel, and Marion each converted jumpers to give DC a 6-2 lead with three minutes off the clock. After two minutes went by scoreless the Devils went on an 8-0 charge started by a triple for
Caitlin Blackman and closed out at the foul line by
Lindsey Hollenshead making it 14-2 home team with 3:20 to go. A three for Tessa Zamolyi at the two minute mark stopped the run, but then
Kate Montgomery and Hollenshead found the bottom of the net. Dickinson appeared primed to take an 18-5 edge to the second but Zamolyi forced a steal in the defensive end and hit a running half-court buzzer-beater to trim the gap to ten (18-8) after one.
Six points by Montgomery in the first 2:26 of the second extended the margin to 24-10. The next eight points were split between the sides with Marion scoring twice for the Red and White holding the lead at 14 (28-14) with 2:46 left. Sam Osorio helped the Greyhounds grab four of the last six to cut the deficit down to 30-18 going to break.
To start the third it was all Devils as the visitors missed their first three shots, while Blackman hit from deep and both Montgomery and Neigel scored in the paint to open the advantage to the largest of the night at 19 (37-18) with 7:48 to play. Moravian then chipped away as the trio Kayla Yoegel, Osorio, and Zamolyi led a 9-2 run to make it 39-27. A jumper and layup for Blackman, followed by a Marion trey and finish at the rim from
Jenna Weinstein helped DC to blow the lead back out to 48-29 inside the final half-minute. Yoegel would split a pair at the line to close the frame.
The Greyhounds showed some life to kickoff the fourth as Yoegel went on a person 8-2 push to close within 50-38. After a Weinstein foul shot stopped the charge for a second Brielle Guarente, Amy Morgan, and Zamolyi answered with a 9-2 stretch making it 53-47 still with half the quarter to go. Dickinson turned things right back in their favor with the combo of Blackman and Marion leading an 8-3 run to push the advantage back over double-figures (61-50) with a minute left. The Devils would then salt the game away with Kolb knocking down five of six at the charity stripe to cap off the 66-54 win.
