CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team went into the fourth quarter of the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday afternoon with a 33-32 lead over the visiting Haverford College Fords. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they shot just 1-of-12 from the floor over the final ten minutes to allow the Fords to go on a 22-5 run to earn a 54-38 win at the Kline Center.
The visitors were out of the blocks first with Ally Landau scoring five points in the opening 40-seconds. Then, the home side answered back with a layup from
Gina Neigel off a nice dish from
Caitlin Blackman, followed by a three-point play for
Clair Marion to knot the score. Cortlyn Morris, Kayla Robinson, and Landau mounted a 7-2 push to make it 12-7. However, Dickinson tallied five of the final nine points with
Kate Montgomery and Blackman providing jumpers, while Marion split a pair on the line to leave DC down 16-12 after one.Â
A Landau triple and Gia Flamini helped the Fords to extend the margin to 21-13 less than two minutes into the period. The next three minutes went by scoreless, before Dickinson netted four straight thanks to Marion and Neigel prior to Landau picking up four herself to make it 25-17 Haverford with 6:13 off the clock. The Devils would wrap-up the half with a 6-0 charge courtesy of triples by Blackman and Marion to cut the deficit down to just 25-23 heading to the locker room.Â
Neigel and Landau traded buckets over the first 70-seconds of the third, before Blackman hit a pair on the charity stripe to tie the score at 27-27 with 8:33 left. Over the ensuing two-and-a-half minutes the two sides combined to go 0-for-13, leading up to
Mia Kolb finding Neigel for a jumper in the paint and the Devils first lead of the day 29-27. After a Landau basket
Jenna Weinstein and Neigel hit the bottom of the net for DC to grab their largest lead of the game 33-29. However, the Fords did not go away with Robinson converting the "old-fashioned" three-point play to leave the Devils in front 33-32 at the end of three.
The trio of Erin Albright, Landau, and Robinson put together an 8-0 run over the first five minutes to reclaim a 40-33 advantage. Two foul shots by Kolb stopped the charge for a brief moment, before two treys from Flamini and one by Landau aided a 14-3 rampage to end the game as the Devils were only able to get a triple by Marion to set the final score of 54-38.
