Devils Defense Can't Hold Off Hopkins in CC Championship

BALTIMORE - The Dickinson women's soccer team took and repelled the Johns Hopkins pressure for as long as they could on Sunday afternoon, but were held without a shot on the day as the Red and White were outshot 30-2 as the host Blue Jays earned a 4-0 win in the Centennial Conference Championship at Homewood Field.

The home side had the first chance of the match just 34-seconds in when a foul just across midfield led to a free kick. The ball was played in by Kendall Dandridge to the head of Breukelen Woodard who knocked it just wide of Sophia Kavulich in net. After the Red and White had a good spell of play in the attacking third, but could not muster a shot towards goal the Blue Jays broke back into the Devils half and had offerings by Rachel Jackson and Dandridge both cancelled out by the defense. Hopkins continued to carry the majority of the play over the next ten minutes. However, shots from Maria Romo-Nichols, Katie Sullivan, and Woodard did not come close to scaring Kavulich. The Devils finally got themselves back in the attacking half during the 24th-minute earning a corner kick, but the service sailed over Emma Huntzinger in goal for the Jays. Off the ensuing goal kick the trio of Kacie Filian, Megha Salvi, and Woodard all ripped shots at frame however none of them tested the keeper. Kavulich would record her first save at the 29:16 mark turning aside Sullivan, before denying Salvi during the 36th. Unfortunately, for DC the hosts found the opening marker with 39:02 off the clock when Dandridge fired a shot from about 25-yards out that deflected off a Devil defender and hit the back of the net. Hopkins added two more attempts over the final three minutes, but did not cause Kavulich to make another stop allowing the Jays to take a 1-0 lead to the break.

Dickinson came out much more aggressive to begin the second-half as they pushed into the attacking third on multiple occasions inside the opening 15 minutes. However, for all the pressure the Red and White were able to generate they were not able to get a shot off. Johns Hopkins best chance in the first 20 minutes came from Jackson as she forced a stop out of Kavulich diving down to her left. Unfortunately, two minutes later the Jays would add onto their advantage when Dandridge lofted a perfectly weighted pass to Rebecca Rosen who stuck the ball in the upper corner for the 2-0 advantage. Hopkins pushed it to 3-0 with 65:43 gone thanks to 25-yard strike into the upper left corner by Sullivan. With Dickinson throwing numbers up into the attack trying to chip away at the deficit the home side found another one in the 78th once again through Rosen. The Devils recorded two shots in the final five minutes. The first came in the 86th-minute when a free kick into the box landed on the foot of Lauren Bracken, but her shot rang the post, while Lexie Greene sent a free kick wide at the horn.
