WASHINGTON - The Dickinson women's basketball team opened up their 2022-23 season on Tuesday night with a hard-fought 55-47 non-conference loss to the Catholic University of America at the DuFour Center.
Kate Montgomery was the only member of the Red and White in double-digits with 18.
The Devils struggled out of the gate as four foul shots and a triple by Carly Mulvaney gave Catholic a 7-0 lead just 37-seconds in. It took until the 2:48 mark for Dickinson to find their first points of the season when
Caitlin Blackman stuck a three-pointer. The scoring dried up over the next few minutes, before an Erin Thompson layup and a three for Sammie McCarter opened the margin back out to seven (12-5). However, buckets from
Kate Montgomery and
Jenna Weinstein helped DC to pull within 14-9 after one.
A jumper by Erin Doherty began the second for the Cards, but Dickinson responded with a 6-0 push thanks to jumpers from
Gina Neigel and Montgomery to cut the deficit down to just one (16-15) with two minutes gone. Catholic tried to open things back up using a 6-2 run to make it 22-17 with the only visiting bucket coming from Montgomery. Dickinson worked all the way back to 24-24
Lindsey Hollenshead,
Clair Marion, and Montgomery found the scoresheet for the Red and White. The home side ended the half with three free throws to take a 27-24 edge into the locker room.
Dickinson grabbed four of the first six points coming out of the break thanks to
Mia Kolb and Montgomery closing to within 28-29, before a 10-0 Catholic charge ending on an "old-fashioned" three-point play by Rachel Bussanich opened up a double-digit advantage at 39-28 with 3:15 remaining. The Red and White answered the home run with a solid push of their own with Montgomery scoring five and Marion knocking home a triple to make it 39-36 Cards heading into the final period.
The hosts got buckets by Keegan Douglas, Doherty, and Mulvaney over the opening 90-seconds to bump the lead out to nine (45-36). Blackman assisted on a jumper from Montgomery, prior to hitting the bottom of the net herself a minute later to cut the deficit to 46-42 at the halfway point. Unfortunately, for the Devils foul shots by Hollenshead and Montgomery, in addition to a basket from Kolb were not enough as Catholic was able to keep DC at an arm's length to pick up the 55-47 win.
