Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team was in front early, but a potent Misericordia offense proved to be the difference as they scored in five consecutive innings en route to a 15-4 win over the Red and White at MacPhail Field.
Final: Cougars 15, DEVILS 4
W- Max Oliver (2-0) | L- Koll Peichel (0-3)
Inside the Game
After two scoreless innings from Brian Riley the Devils struck first. Matt Torres doubled to left with one out to get things going. Then, Tom Gannaway drew one of his three walks before Ryan Thompson singled to center. Cougars starter Max Oliver issued two consecutive bases-loaded walks to Tyler Scaff and Kenny Tagliareni to give Dickinson the 2-0 lead after two.
Riley met his first bit of trouble in the fourth as he lost his command for a few hitters giving up two walks and hitting a batter to load the bags for Austin Miles. A wild pitch and single led to three runs coming in and putting the visitors ahead for good. Koll Peichel took over on the hill in the fifth and gave up a pair of RBI singles along with a sac fly and a bases-loaded hit by a pitch to extend the advantage to 7-2. That would be the second of five consecutive innings where Misericordia scored more than a run. Matt Spind took the next two innings for the Red and White and ran into issues of his own giving up a two-run double to Santino Manganella and an RBI single for Brady Madden to push the lead out to 10-2 going to the home-half of the sixth. A leadoff double for Tom Gannaway and a walk to Tyler Scaff led to the end of the day for Oliver as he was replaced by Brendan Gray. The first batter he faced would be Tagliareni who singled through the right side to drive in one cutting it to 10-3 after six.
The Cougars added three more during the seventh on just one hit, while being aided by two DC errors. Misericordia capped off their scoring in the eighth against Grayson Walker with a bases-loaded walk and a run-scoring double-play accounting for two runs and pushing the advantage to 15-3. The Red and White got one back during the bottom of the frame as a free pass to Gannaway brought Ryan Thompson to the dish. During the at-bat, Gannaway swiped second. Thompson would work a walk versus Jaiden Cioffi and appear to put runners on first and second, however, ball four got all the way to the backstop and with Gannaway hustling around the bases he scored making it 15-4.
Jake Birnbaum had the ninth on the mound for DC and allowed two straight singles, but then settled down and got the next three batters to retire the side. Two errors and a single filled the bags for the Devils with two away, but Alex Bouchard popped up to the catcher to end the game.
