Inside the Game

After having little time to dwell on their rough outing yesterday Dickinson came out ready to go on Wednesday as Zach Gordon set down the Knights in order to begin the game. The Dickinson offense gave Gordon run support right away as Desmond Watkins reached on an error before Mazzone went deep with a titanic fly to right.  Then after two quick outs, Colin Jones reached on the second error of the frame leading to Chase Weller doing some yardwork for a 4-0 edge after one. hit the next to bring home Colin Jones and the Devils were in a groove. After the Knights got one run back in the second with Marcus White reaching on a wild pitch prior to being driven in by Alec Silverman with a single. However, the Devils answered right back with four more in their half. Cole Benner and Watkins worked a couple of walks before Mazzone added to his RBI total with a smack to center. Kaden Sigmon singled to plate one more then with two outs consecutive wild pitches by Knights starter Thomas Carroll allowed two more to come in making it 8-1.

Neumann's quiet start would not continue in the third as they managed to get to reliever Alex Hill for three runs thanks to a pair of RBI singles and a bases-loaded hit batter to trim the margin to 8-4. Nathan Weisoly came in for the fourth. He walked three batters in the inning, but still toughed out a scoreless inning. The Red Devils carried the momentum from Weisoly with two more runs in the fourth. Mazzone led off the inning with a triple to put him a double shy of the cycle. Sigmon singled to bring him home and would later score himself on a Weller groundout to third stretching it to 10-4 after four.

Ben Stoopack was next for Dickinson on the mound. He could not find his groove in the fifth. Neumann scored three runs off of him thanks to a sac fly and a single before Pat Metzger was summoned out of the pen. Dickinson picked up three more in the fifth with Benner whacking a double to start things off against RJ Mawhinney before a Watkins single plated him. Next up was Mazzone and he did what he does best sending one up into the grass over the fence making it 13-7. The Knights pulled one back during their next at-bat with White working a walk and then Zach Ray ripped a two-bagger to center for an RBI. DC answered with three more in the home-half of the sixth thanks to two more long-balls as Benner went deep, followed by a single from Watkins with one out. That brought Mazzone to the dish and he completed the hat trick with his third jack of the game pushing the margin out to 16-8.

Robby Smith began the seventh on the hill for the Red and White and immediately ran into issues walking the first three batters. The Devils then went to Jake Birnbaum and he fared no better as Ryan Lopez blasted a grand slam, followed by an RBI groundout for Andrew Curran. After two more walks in came Peyton Fox who gave up a two-run double to Anthony Basciano capping off a seven-run frame and making it 16-15.

A single and a free pass led to Alex Bouchard smacking a two-run double in the seventh to cap-off the scoring. Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week Joey Sangiuolo allowed two base runners over the final two innings but was able to shut the door for the Devils.
