CARLISLE, Pa. – It is Cole Hare's world, and we were all just living in it on Saturday as the senior clubbed three home runs and drove home seven runs as the Dickinson baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Penn State-Mont Alto on Saturday afternoon at MacPhail Field.
Game One – DEVILS 5, Nittany Lions 2
The narrative of Saturday was centered around Cole Hare and his production at the plate and that started from the very first frame. Kenny Tagliareni started things off by working a hit by pitch before Lukas Atsalis followed that with a double to the gap. With just one out Cole Hare went big fly with a 3-run blast to left field giving the Red and White the early lead.
In the early goings of the game, there was not a whole lot to discuss offensively for Penn. St.-Mont Alto as Thomas Marshman came out dealing. Marshman gave up just a single hit to Zane Mack in the 3rd inning. For Marshman the success came with his ability to throw first-pitch strikes and stay ahead in counts. He had both the fastball and breaking ball working and he was able to stay ahead and keep hitters off balance. His final line would be 5 2/3 innings pitched, 1 hit, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts.
Heading into the 6th inning the score was still 3-0 thanks to Marshman and the recovery of Logan Layton after giving up the homer to Hare. Luke Jackson led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Kaden Sigmon then picked up a single before Tom Gannaway doubled to bring Jackson home. Layton's night ended in the 6th as he salvaged a solid performance going 5 1/3 innings with 2 hits, 4 earned runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. He would be replaced by Trystan Housman who would also give up the final Devils run in the seventh when Gannaway singled with the bases full to plate Andrew Mazzone for the 5-0 advantage after seven.
Mont Alto put up a fight in the 8th inning though as they found two runs off reliever Matt Spind. The first run came thanks to Chance McClure who singled to drive in Jonathon Lentvorsky. Jared Pine would be the second and final run for the Nittany Lions as Spind got a sac fly out of Tyler Moreland to result in the 5-2 final. His line would go 3 1/3 innings with 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.
Game Two- DEVILS 11, Nittany Lions 3
In-between the Lines
Game two brought a very similar narrative for the Nittany Lions bats as they were left puzzled against another Dickinson starter. For many of the same reasons that Marshman found success in game one, Brian Riley thrived in game two. Riley matched the one-hit performance of Marshman and did so going 6 full innings of 1 hit baseball. It was an impressive final pitch count for Riley who finished with just 59 pitches with 41 strikes.
The Red Devil offense did not start the game with a crooked number like the last game but found a way to score inning after inning against Zach Garlin. Gannaway got things going in the 2nd with a leadoff double. He was advanced by Chase Weller on a bunt before Tyler Scaff drove a ball deep to right for a sacrifice fly to bring in the run.
Hare continued his offensive onslaught with his second home run of the day to bring in Tagliareni who led off with a single. Luke Jackson and Colin Jones kept the fun going in the 3rd as they ripped two consecutive singles before Gannaway would bring in one with a grounder to the pitcher.
The Devils added on in the fifth by plating two more. Hare led off with a walk which wrapped up the afternoon for Garlin. He went 4 innings allowing 5 hits, 6 runs (3 earned), 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. He was replaced by Tanner Byers. Jones singled off the reliever before Weller brought in two unearned runs thanks to a miscommunication in right-center resulting in a dropped fly ball.
With the Devils on top 6-0, Hare completed his homer hat trick with a two-run blast to make it 8-0 in the sixth. DC tacked on three more in the frame with Weller providing an RBI groundout before Scaff plated two with a knock to center.
Koll Peichel took over on the hill in the seventh allowed the three Nittany Lion runs with Collin Beech driving in two on a single and Nathanial Smith scoring one on a fielder's choice to wrap up the scoring at 11-3.
The Red Devils (2-4) will return to MacPhail Field on Wednesday at 3:00 PM to face off against Neumann before their trip to Auburndale, Florida.
