Devils Shocked by Bison in the Nation’s Capital

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Dickinson volleyball team made the two-and-a-half hour drive to the nation's capital on Wednesday night to take on Gallaudet University. Unfortunately for the Red and White they could just never get things going as the host Bison stunned the Devils 3-0 at the GU Field House in a non-conference match.

Gallaudet was off to a fast start with kills from Nicole Hicks, Citrine Lummer, Anya Pothorski, and Malia Zornoza staking the hosts to an 8-2 lead. Dickinson then took two of the next three on a kill for Emma Popham and a bad serve by Alyssa Glennon to cut it down to 9-4. A kill from Amelia Kim and a bad attack for Jazelina Bumbala made it 12-6, before a 6-0 run led to a 13-3 charge as Pothorski capped the set with a kill at 25-9. The Bison dominated the first set hitting an astonishing .480, while limiting the Red and White to -.069.

The home side once again started strong as kills for Cassidy Perry, Emily Wright, Pothorski, and Zornoza opened up an 8-3 lead. The Devils then rallied back with an 8-2 march of their own with Camille Dofiles, Emma Lange, and Kim bringing the visitors to the front 11-10. After GU reclaimed a slim 12-11 edge Alexa Barowski, Mathilde Verbitsky, and Popham moving DC back ahead 15-13. A 9-2 rampage for the Bison made it 22-17. However, the Red and White would not go away as Ann Marie Patterson, Kim, and Lange pulled the Devils to within 24-22, but Perry put down the next point for the 25-22 win.

The two sides shared the opening six points, before kills by Cassidy Davis, Barowski, Lange, and Popham helped DC take an 8-6 lead. Gallaudet took four of the next five to grab a 10-9 edge, prior to kills from Avery Lewis, Barowski, and Kim making it 13-11 Devils. After the teams split the ensuing four points, Dickinson stretched the margin to 21-16 thanks to some Bison miscues and a couple of Lange kills. Unfortunately for the visitors the home team snapped to attention at that point as they closed on a 9-2 charge with Wright putting away the final kill to end the match 25-23.
