Devils Roll Past Chargers in Season Opener

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team got a combined 25 kills between Emma Lange and Mathilde Verbitsky as the Red and White rolled to a 3-0 season opening win over the visiting Lancaster Bible College Chargers on Tuesday night at Kline Center.

The Devils fell behind early in the first set 8-3 as the visitors got kills from Riley Dodrer and Chloe King. Dickinson then responded with scores by Lange and Verbitsky to close within 11-8. Emma Popham pounded down a score to make it 14-11, before she notched a block and Lange put away another kill bringing the margin down to 15-13. Dodrer and King continued to hold the Red and White at bay as LBC clinged to an 18-16 advantage. However, Lange, Popham, and Verbitsky rallied the troops to knot the score 20-20. The Chargers brought themselves to within two points of the set at 23-23 with a kill by Faith Hammond, but an error from King and a combination block by Lange and Verbitsky pushed the hosts over the line 25-23.

Dickinson began the second strong as scores by Cassidy Davis and Popham gave DC a 6-3 edge. LBC pushed back with kills from Morgan Fenstermacher, Hammond, and King cut the deficit down to 13-12. Then, the Red and White seized control with Lange accounting for four points, while Verbitsky added two kills during a 7-2 Devils charge to grab a commanding 20-14 lead. Once again though LBC did not go quietly embarking on a 7-3 run of their own Fenstermacher and King supplying the offense to make it 23-21. With DC looking at set point Willow Palmer setup Lange for a resounding kill to end the set 25-22.

The Chargers were out of the gate first in the third game as Grace Farlow, Leah Helman, Dodrer, and King gave the away side a slim 8-6 edge. Dickinson responded back with authority though with three kills by Verbitsky and two points from Palmer capped a 9-1 Devils rampage to jump in front 15-9 leading to an LBC timeout. That woke the Chargers back up as they went galloping forward with a 9-4 run with kills by Bethany Pettis, Farlow, Fenstermacher, and King to close within 19-18. The Red and White would not be denied though scoring six of the final seven points thanks to three aces by Camille Dofiles and a pair of Lange kills to wrap up the 25-19 win.
