Devils Topple Bears to Stay at the Top of Centennial Standings

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team continue to assert themselves as one of the teams to beat in the Centennial Conference on Tuesday night as the Red and White led nearly wire-to-wire in a 55-39 win over the visiting Ursinus College Bears at the Kline Center.

After the first three minutes went by scoreless the Devils went on a 6-0 run to kickoff the scoring with Caitlin Blackman, Lindsey Hollenshead, and Kate Montgomery all hitting the bottom of the net. It would take 8:09 into the period for the visitors to find the scoreboard as Chinwe Irondi scored in the lane. Dickinson capped off the scoring in the low-scoring first with 91-seconds left when Clair Marion hit a jumper for the 8-2 edge through ten minutes.

Ursinus tallied the opening five points of the second with Alison Lisanti hitting from deep, while Irondi added a bucket in the lane. The Devils answered with the next three points thanks to free throws from Mia Chapman and Jenna Weinstein pushing the margin to 11-7 with 6:34 to go until half. Five more by Lisanti over the next minute put the Bears in front for the first time 12-11, but jumpers from Blackman and Chapman sandwiched a triple for Montgomery moving DC back on top 18-12 at the 6:45 mark. With just over a minute Madison Smith stunted the Devils charge with a layup. However, Montgomery would stick her second trey of the period and Hollenshead beat the buzzer in the lane for the 23-14 lead going to the break.

A layup by Irondi started the scoring after the break, but then three points each from Marion and Montgomery opened the lead up to 29-16 with three minutes gone. Baskets for Makenna Foder and Smith pulled the margin to within a dozen (31-19), before jumpers from Mia Kolb, Marion, and Weinstein blew the advantage out to 38-21 with 7:15 off the clock. The Bears kept clawing away at the deficit with free throws by Margrett Brown and Kelly Grant coupled with a jay from Smith making it 40-28 inside the final minute. Chapman would record the final point of the period by splitting two at the charity line with two ticks left for the 41-28 lead going to the fourth.

The two sides traded the first eight points of the final quarter with Hollenshead and Marion supplying the offense for the Devs. DC then took full control of the contest with an 8-3 run opening up the margin to almost 20 at 53-35 thanks to buckets from Blackman, Marion and Montgomery with just under two minutes remaining. Natalie Mehl would score twice for the visitors, while Abby John hit the bottom of the net for the Red and White to cap off the scoring at 55-39.
