Second-Half Surge Not Enough for Devils Against Bears

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team made a strong push in the second-half outscoring the visiting Ursinus College Bears 44-32 over the final 20 minutes. Unfortunately, it would not be enough as the Bears held on for an 80-72 Centennial Conference win on Tuesday night at the Kline Center.

The Bears were flying early as they led 9-1 inside the opening three minutes with a single free throw by Isaiah Edmond being the lone DC point. A three-ball from Brandon Wiercinski, followed by a fastbreak bucket by Edmond cut the margin down to 9-6 with five minutes off the clock. Ursinus continued to showcase depth up and down their bench over the next five minutes as six different players recorded points for the guests during a 12-5 push with Martin Mann accounting for all five for Dickinson to make it 24-13. Anthony Goeb tallied five of the next nine points to trim the gap by one to 28-18 with eight minutes left in the period. The two sides shared the next eight points, before a jumper for Jaiden Jakubowski sparked a 9-0 run to open the lead back out to 41-22. A foul shot from Mann was followed by a jumper from Andrew Gostovich to stem the tide for a moment, but once again the visitors had the answer with a 7-1 response making it 48-26. Dickinson hoped to seize the momentum going into the break as Randy Shephard found Mann in the paint for a two-handed jam to wrap up the scoring at 48-28.

The Red and White tried to ride the energy from that dunk early in the second-half as Edmond, Goeb and Mann all scored inside the opening two minutes to cut the margin down to 50-34. However, points by Cole Grubbs, Mohamed Toure, and Trevor Wall quickly pushed the advantage up to 57-38 at the five minute mark. A jay for Goeb and a pair at the charity line from Mann surrounded a triple from Nick Nocito, but it was only able to cut into the number by one 60-42. The Bears moved their lead to the largest of the night over the next three minutes with an 8-2 charge ending on a jumper by Wall making it 68-44 with 9:48 to play. Drew Haueisen, Goeb and Shephard tried to put together a response for the Devs as they scored seven of the next nine points to make it 70-51 still with seven minutes remaining. Four points by Nocito stretched the margin back to 20 (74-54), but then buckets by Edmond, Goeb, Gostovich, and Shephard led to a 12-1 romp to close within single-digits 75-66 with 16:50 off the clock. Unfortuately, for the home side two baskets for Mann and one by Edmond were not enough to get any closer as the Bears were able to keep the Devils at an arm's length to see out the 80-72 win.
