Late Triple Leads to OT Loss for Devils

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team found themselves in a familiar situation on Saturday afternoon trailing by double-digits at the break. However, as has been the case all season the Red and White rallied back to eventually tie and take the lead late in the fourth. Unfortunately, a late three-pointer for Kim Kockenmeister forced overtime allowing the host Swarthmore College Garnet to outpace the Devils 11-5 over the extra session to pick up the Centennial Conference win and handing DC their third consecutive loss.

After a scoreless opening minute Dickinson would take their only first-half lead when Mia Kolb split two on the charity line for a 1-0 edge. Swarthmore then mounted a 6-1 push on baskets from Dana Bandurick, Anna Hansson and Kim Kockenmeister to make it 6-2 with 4:44 left. A pair of Jenna Weinstein jumpers were followed by five in a row for Alyssa Hayashi to bump the margin by one to 11-6. A triple out of the hands of Caitlin Blackman along with two each by Mia Chapman and Clair Marion had the Red and White knocking on the door 14-13 inside the final minute. Caroline Selinger stuck a trey to finish off the scoring for the first.

Dickinson began the second strong with a three by Weinstein, unfortunately the Garnet responded with eight of the following ten to extend the lead to 25-18 at the halfway point of the frame. After four straight for Norah Wingfield, Gina Neigel drilled two on the foul line before Katelyn Becker and Wingfield found the bottom of the net preventing DC from closing the gap leaving things at 33-20 with just under 90-seconds to go. Marion provided the final basket of the period trying to give the Devils some momentum heading into the break.

With the first two minutes of the third the visitors had only managed to chip one point off the deficit despite buckets from Kate Montgomery and Kolb keeping the hosts in front 37-27. Baskets for Kolb and Marion pulled DC the closest they had been in awhile to within 37-31, but then two on the line by Carolina Lopez stemmed the tide and made it 39-31 still with four minutes left. Swarthmore would not score over the final 3:45 as Dickinson ended the frame on an 8-0 run with six points coming from Chapman to lock things up at 39-39 heading to the fourth.

Less than one minute into the final frame DC took their first lead since the first quarter when Chapman cashed in a layup to make it 41-39 with 52-seconds off the clock. The two sides shared the next dozen points with Lindsey Hollenshead and Montgomery supplying the Devils offense to allow the Red and White to hold onto a slim 47-45 edge with 2:42 remaining. Three foul shots for Hayashi brought the Garnet back to the front 48-47, but then layups for Kolb and Montgomery push DC ahead 51-48 at the 9:41 mark. After a Swat timeout allowed for the inbound in the front-court Hayashi handed the ball off to Kockenmeister who hit nothing but net for the tie. Dickinson had a chance at the buzzer for the win, however, the ball rolled off the hands of Montgomery resulting in overtime.

To kickoff the extra session Hayashi and Marion traded triples, before Hayashi and Neigel exchanged paint buckets to keep things deadlocked 56-56 with 2:32 off the clock. Unfortunately, for the Devs they went 0-4 over the remainder of the period, while the Garnet went on a 6-0 run to end the game at 62-56.
