WESTMINSTER, Md. - The sixth-seeded Dickinson women's soccer team had a couple of tough bounces go against them on Tuesday afternoon which allowed the host and third-seeded McDaniel College Green Terror to collect a slim 2-1 win in the Centennial Conference First Round at the McDaniel Soccer Complex.
The first ten minutes of the match belonged to the home side as they recorded five shots during that time with Jessica Weinoldt and Elaina Kluttz forcing stops out of Devils keeper
Elizabeth Allen, while
Ava Prisco was turned aside by Lauren Hoolahan at the other end. However, the hosts did make it 1-0 on their sixth chance of the match when Kluttz was denied by Allen, unfortunately, the ball skipped out of the keeper's hands and bounced off a back-tracking defender and into the net for the early lead. The Red and White tried to immediately find an equalizer, but
Sophia Elguera was stoned by Hoolahan, before Prisco sent an offering wide of goal to move the match into the final 15 minutes of the half. McDaniel posted one more shot prior to the end of the half when Peyton Viggiano was stopped by Allen off a corner served in by Allison Storm to send things to the break.
It would take until there was 12:31 off the clock to see the first chance of the second-half develop as Liz LeChard was shutdown by Allen, which led to the Devils breaking down field in search of a tying goal but
Sarah Cudmore rang iron. During the next ten minutes the home side was terrorizing the Dickinson box earning two corners and recording a pair of shots from Kristin Linahan and Viggiano forcing Allen into one more stop. Five minutes later the visitors found some momentum as a corner corner by
Emily Dunkel hit
Allie Charnas who fired wide of goal, before Dunkel played another corner into the box this time to the head of
Lila Brown who nodded the ball past Hoolahan for the equalizer with just under 20 minutes left. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the tie score was short-lived as with 75:27 gone a cross hit in from the left-side bounced off a bunch of heads without being cleared by DC allowing the ball to eventually find Bayleigh Perdue who ripped a shot past Allen for the 2-1 advantage. Dickinson used the next minute to try a find a quick response as
Allison Cudmore missed the target, while
Emma Cooney danced through the McDaniel defense and unleashed a shot towards goal that was pushed aside by Hoolahan. After Allen recorded two more stops to keep the score where it was,
Katie Vassilakos recorded the Devils final offering of the match, but it did not test Hoolahan allowing the home side to leave the pitch with the victory.
