WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Dickinson volleyball took part in their final tri-match of the season on Saturday afternoon by taking on both Catholic University and New Jersey City University at the DuFour Center on the campus of Catholic University. The Red and White dropped a 3-0 decision to the Cardinals, before righting the ship to blank the Gothic Knights 3-0.
Match One - Cardinals 3, DEVILS 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-20)
The two sides traded the opening eight points with a kill from
Amelia Kim making it 4-4. Three Cardinal miscues were the only points for the Devils during a 10-3 outburst for the hosts to go ahead 14-7. Three kills for Kim, a solo by
Eliette Whittaker along with a combination block between
Mathilde Verbitsky and Whittaker helped pull DC to within 16-13. Dickinson could only tally three points the remainder of the set as Catholic ended on a 9-3 charge with Olivia Blondin putting down the final kill (25-16).
Dickinson fell behind early in the second 12-4 as
Emma Popham, Kim and Verbitsky accounted for the visitors scores. The Devils then ripped off seven in a row thanks to
Alexa Barowski and
Grace Coccagna to cut the deficit down to 12-11. However, Erin Faughnan, Halie Murphy, Tanya Sichling and Blondin opened the margin out to 22-15. An ace by
Avery Lewis helped to give DC some life at 22-17, but Blondin, Murphy and Sichling scored three straight to cap off the 25-17 win.
Jessica Currie, Kim and Verbitsky gave the Devils a 5-4 edge to kickoff the third. The two sides then traded the ensuing eight points to leave DC still ahead by one (9-8). Kills from Kim, Verbitsky and Whittaker kept the Red and White in front 16-12, but then Blondin, Faughnan, Guerin and Murphy picked up ten straight to storm back ahead 22-16.
