Devils Pound the Paint and Garnet in Conference Action

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team continued their strong start to the season on Saturday afternoon by racking up 42 points in the paint and forcing 21 turnovers en route to a dominating 65-46 Centennial Conference win over the visiting Swarthmore College Garnet inside the Kline Center.

The Garnet opened the game up just 43-seconds in with a layup by Alyssa Hayashi. However, after that it was all Dickinson as they went on a 16-0 run over the final nine-plus minutes on buckets from Caitlin Blackman, Mia Chapman, Lindsey Hollenshead, Abby John, Clair Marion and Victoria Zerbe. During the Devils charge the defense was lockdown as they forced the Garnet into nine consecutive misses to finish the period.

The Red and White made it 18-straight points to begin the second when Marion picked up another bucket with one minute off the clock. After a pair on the foul line from Hayashi, Dickinson continued to add-on to their advantage as Chapman, Hollenshead, Marion and Zerbe embarked on a 10-2 run to make it 28-6 with 4:35 to play until halftime. Hayashi maintained her solo performance with two more jumpers as she netted the first ten points of the game for the Garnet. Indatou Ali-Goukoye and Marion pushed it to 32-10, before Norah Wingfield finished off an "old-fashioned" three-point play trimming the margin by three points heading to the locker room (32-13).

Swarthmore came out of the break on fire with Anna Hansson and Vanessa Amsinger embarking on a 9-0 romp to close within 32-22 still with seven minutes to play. The Devils then responded in a big way as Marion tallied the first four points of an 8-0 home run with Jenna Weinstein and Blackman each adding a bucket of their own for the 40-22 advantage at the halfway point of the period. Layups from Chapman and Marion were the only points for the home side during a 10-4 push by the Garnet to make it 44-32. The two sides shared the final eight points of the period with Irene Haramis knocking down two at the line, while Marion chipped in another jumper off a dish from Haramis to give the Red and White a 48-36 lead through 30 minutes.

Inside the opening minute of the fourth each side found the bottom of the net with Hansson scoring for the visitors, while Marion hit a jumper in the painted area. The following two minutes went by scoreless until Wingfield notched a layup, prior to Chapman netting four straight for the Devils to push the margin out to 14 (54-40) with 5:52 to go. After a bucket for Hayashi, Marion knocked down a triple off a feed from Blackman and Chapman added more paint points thanks to the assist by Marion pushing the lead to 59-42. A three-point play for Hayashi was answered by points for Blackman, John and Weinstein for the 65-46 final.
