Devils Perplexed by Bullets at the Battlefield

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Dickinson women's basketball team could just never get on track Wednesday night at Bream Gymnasium as the Red and White dug a 23-9 hole after one quarter and never could recover as the host Gettysburg College collected a 68-38 Centennial Conference win.

The home side would be on the board just 14-seconds in as Shinya Lee took a feed from Caitlyn Priore to take an early 2-0 lead. The Red and White would come up empty on their first three shots, before Clair Marion setup Mia Chapman prior to hitting a pair on the line to claim a 4-2 lead. Gettysburg responded in a big way with AB Holsinger knocking down two shots from deep to make it 8-4 at the 3:41 mark. Marion finally put an end to an 8-0 home romp with a triple, but Mackenzie Szlosek answered right back with three of her own pushing the advantage to 13-7. The Red and White continued to struggle from the floor missing five in a row, which allowed Alayna Arnolie to tally eight consecutive points to open up a sizable cushion at 21-7 with just over a minute to play in the first. Reagan Chrencik and Victoria Zerbe traded buckets to end the period leaving the score at 23-9 through ten minutes.

Despite early baskets in the second from Caitlin Blackman and Chapman, the duo of Chrencik and Holsinger put together a 7-4 stretch to extend the margin to 30-13 with four minutes off the clock. Two at the stripe for Abby John stunted the charge for a second, and then was joined by buckets from Jenna Weinstein and Marion to pull within 30-19. However, the Bullets notched the final three points of the half all from the foul line as Kimberly Hopkins cashed in three at the charity line to make it 33-19 at the break.

The two sides traded the opening eight points of the third with Chapman and Zerbe scoring for DC, while Arnolie and Szlosek cashed in for the home side to leave the score at 37-23 with just two minutes gone. Six of the ensuing nine belonged to the Devils as Lindsey Hollenshead, John and Marion hit the bottom of the net to keep Dickinson within striking distance 40-29 at the halfway point of the period. Unfortunately, the Bullets closed the period on a 10-2 outburst to hold a commanding 50-31 advantage going into the fourth.

Gettysburg just continued to pile on to start the fourth as they started the period with an 11-0 run on points by Arnolie, Lee, and Szlosek extended the margin out to 61-31 with 5:43 remaining. Dickinson finally got on the board in the quarter as Clare Cronley buried a trey out of the corner. The Red and White would score two more times in the game with Ella Smith recording a pair of jumpers as the Bullets locked up the 68-38 win.
