Strong First Half Not Enough for Devils at the Battlefield

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Dickinson men's basketball put up a good fight through the first 20 minutes at the battlefield on Wednesday night against one of the top teams in the Centennial Conference in the Gettysburg College Bullets. Unfortunately, for the Red and White after making up a four-point halftime deficit the Bullets used a 14-0 run early in the second half to help secure a 62-48 victory at Bream Gymnasium.

The Devils began the game cold missing their first three shots from the floor, while the home side got free throws by Ryan McKeon and Jordan Stafford to take a 3-0 lead with three minutes gone. A layup for David Petrusev finally put DC on the board, but then the Red and White came up empty on their next three shots as well before Petrusev knocked home a three for Dickinson's first lead of the night 5-3. Five consecutive for Isiah Edmond and a driving finish at the rim by Luis Ruiz allowed the visitors to open up a 12-6 edge as Nate Williams delivered from deep for the hosts during that push. The two teams shared the next eight points with Aaron Bailey and Petrusev accounting for the Dickinson points to leave the Devils up 16-10 with 8:07 remaining. A personal 9-0 gallop by Akim Joseph brought the Bullets from the back to the front as they grabbed a 19-16 advantage. The Red and White stayed close-by as four points for Nate Ogbu cut it down to 21-20, but Williams cashed from three and Joseph hit a tough step-back to claim a seven-point cushion (27-20). Six straight by Ogbu along with a single foul shot for Randy Shephard knotted the score at 27-27, but Stafford netted four points inside the final minute to lead 31-27 after 20 minutes.

Dickinson tried to work themselves back into the game early in the second frame as two on the charity line for Petrusev made it 31-29 and a triple out of the hands of Skyler Venezia cut it back to one 33-32 with two minutes gone. A three-ball for Joseph opened the lead out to 36-32, but four straight by Ogbu pulled DC level at 36-36. The Bullets then seized control using a 14-0 charge on buckets for Carl Schaller, Joseph, Stafford and Williams to open up a 51-36 advantage with 9:37 left. Six by Petrusev attempted to give the Red and White another lifeline as the gap closed by five (52-42). Four of the ensuing six points belonged to the home side as Max Pernetti and Joseph grew the advantage back to a dozen (56-44) at the 16:05 mark. The Bullets from there would never let Dickinson get back into the contest as three points for Petrusev and one at the stripe by Edmond was all the Devils would tally down the stretch as the hosts closed out the 62-48 win.
