Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Devils Done in by Blue Jays Long Range Barrage

BALTIMORE - Playing without their leading scorer and reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week Clair Marion the Dickinson women's basketball team got double-digit efforts from both Lindsey Hollenshead and Jenna Weinstein against the host Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, for the Red and White though the Blue Jays hit at a 58.8% clip from long range to claim a 58-49 Centennial Conference win at Goldfarb Gymnasium.

The home side jumped out 2-0 on a bucket from Elisabeth Peebles, before a triple by Hollenshead and an "old-fashioned" three-point play for Mia Chapman gave the Devils a 6-2 edge with just three minutes gone. After five straight put in by Greta Miller, Dickinson answered back in a big way as consecutive threes for Caitlin Blackman were followed by buckets for Victoria Zerbe and Hollenshead to close out a 10-0 run to grab a 16-7 advantage. Hopkins used the final minute-plus of the period to chip away at the deficit with Jadyn Murray and Michaela O'Neil making it 16-11 through ten minutes.

Dickinson used the opening three minutes of the second period to add onto their lead with Abby John, Hollenshead and Zerbe finding the bottom the net for the 22-13 edge. Despite the Jays continuing to find their footing offensively, scores from the trio of Clare Cronley, Blackman and John kept the Red and White still ahead by nine (28-19) with 3:16 to play. Following a trey by O'Neil, Weinstein began her path towards a career-high 13 points by mounting a personal 5-0 run to make it 33-22, but the hosts would tally the final five of the quarter trimming the gap to 33-27 going to the locker room.

A pair of Weinstein jumpers helped to account for four of the first six points of the third frame, before Murray and O'Neil scored for the home side to bring it down to 37-33 at the 3:53 mark. The duo of Hollenshead and John opened the margin by a point (43-38), before a triple from Peebles brought the Jays to within two after 30 minutes (43-41).

Johns Hopkins turned the game on its head right out of the blocks to begin the fourth as Kendall Dunham, Miller and O'Neil each rang up a three-pointer to grab a 50-43 advantage still with 6:34 remaining. Layups by both Weinstein and Mia Chapman cut the deficit down to five on two separate occasions at 50-45 and 52-47 inside the two minute mark. However, the fourth bomb of the period for the Jays opened it up to 55-47. There would be five foul shots made over the rest of the game with Miller and Peebles hitting for the Jays, while Weinstein notch a pair on the charity line to set the 58-49 final.
