Devils Give #9 Johns Hopkins a Good Fight, but Fall Short

BALTIMORE - The Dickinson men's basketball team put up a staunch effort all evening, but it would not be enough as the ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays picked up a 71-53 Centennial Conference win at Goldfarb Gymnasium on Saturday.

Hopkins opened the game up 5-0 inside the opening two minutes, before Martin Mann stuck the turnaround jumper. Triples from Carson James and John Windley aided an 8-2 run to stretch the lead to 13-4 with nine minutes off the clock. Isaiah Edmond tallied the next four for DC, but Sidney Thybulle and Windley had the answer to maintain the nine-point cushion 17-8 with 8:29 remaining. A pair of free throws for Aaron Bailey and a layup by Blessing Agbonlaho closed the gap to five 17-12. Jayden Nixon and Luke Spellman then exchanged triples, prior to Colin Crothers dropping two in from the line making it 22-15. Bailey and Edmond accounted for four of the last six points of the frame to leave the Devils behind 24-19 at halftime.

The Jays came out firing to begin the second-half as Brian Johansson, Nixon and Windley cashed in four straight from long range to blow the lead out to 36-19 at the 2:11 mark. A foul on Windley resulted in three on the charity line for the Red and White to make it 36-22, unfortunately, they were erased almost immediately when Johansson buried another trey. Edmond and Mann scored four in a row, but then JHU answered with a 7-0 flight to open the margin to 19 at 45-26 still with 13:51 to play. Dickinson continued to put up a good fight as Randy ShephardSkyler Venezia joined Mann on a 7-0 gallop to cut the deficit to  45-33. Over the next couple of minutes James, Johansson and Nixon worked to extend the advantage for the home side out to 57-37 with just under eight to go. Buckets by Edmond and Mann did little help DC chip away as they still trailed 62-43 with 15 minutes gone. The Devils kept on battling all night as Brandon Wiercinski joined Bailey and Edmond on a 6-0 run to trim things to 62-49 at the 17:27 mark. B.J. McNeil and Venezia each recorded a bucket over the final two minutes to set the 71-53 final.
