WASHINGTON - For the second straight game the Dickinson women's lacrosse team did not let an early deficit to a nationally-ranked opponent deter them as the Red and White fell behind 4-0 in the first, before getting a last-minute goal from
Delaney Herbert to complete the 13-12 comeback road win over the 18th-ranked Catholic University Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Carlini Field.
The two traded shots inside the first two minutes with Jessie Lee missing the mark for the home side off the opening draw control and Lauren Davidson having the answer against Yiv Yeagle on a free-position. Over the next six minutes, DC was held without a shot, while four different Cardinals hit the back of the net behind Devils goalie
Peyton VanDorpe for a 4-0 edge prompting a visiting timeout. After an offering from Izzy Fiore sailed wide Dickinson would cash in on their next possession when
Emma Wynne setup Herbert for the finish. The Devils continued to ride the momentum as VanDorpe turned aside Kate Olsen, leading to
Liz Barroll dishing the rock to Yeagle for the goal, followed by Herbert tallying her second and bringing the guests to within one at 4-3 with three minutes left. There would be three more markers in the period with the hosts scoring twice, while
Riley Kuehn got her first point of the year when she assisted on
Bella Guckes goal leaving it at 6-4 after 15-minutes.
Catholic extended the lead to 7-4 just over a minute in as Lindsay Sawyer hit the post, before Olsen picked up the rebound and beat VanDorpe. Herbert recorded the Devils first chance of the period, but went wide. That allowed the Cards to race down the field and got shots by both Grace Hill and Fiore, however none of them past the keeper. Dickinson then tallied on their next two opportunities with Barroll getting her first and
Faith Parker tallying player-up after a yellow card was handed out to Rachel Rubenstein pulling DC to within 7-6 with ten minutes remaining. The goalies then were tasked with holding the score where it was as Davidson stopped
Gabby Guadalupe, while VanDorpe recorded a save on Mia Scarduzio. At the 8:05 mark Olsen bumped the margin back two (8-6), before three minutes later she tried to make it 9-6, but VanDorpe had the answer to keep DC down just two at half.
The defense of both teams was on full display early in the third as there was a combined nine turnovers over the first four minutes. However, the Cardinals would make the first shot of the period count as Olsen scored off a Lee pass pushing it to 9-6. Off the ensuing draw win by Riley Martin, VanDorpe denied an attempt from Hill which led to Caroline Regan picking up a yellow card on the Devils trip down the field. Yeagle got Dickinson back on the board at the 6:08 mark off a dish from Kuehn, before Guckes found Barroll a minute later to close the gap to 9-8. After a shot by Hill missed the mark the Red and White made it all the way back on their ensuing possession with Barroll besting Davidson making it 9-9 still with 5:40 remaining. Catholic got the next two looks at cage through Caroline Beckett and Lee, however neither of them were able to force VanDorpe into making a save. After Yeagle was unable to convert on a free-position chance, Hill would regain the advantage for the Cardinals with 1:49 left. Dickinson was determined to head to the final frame on level terms which they would do courtesy of Parker finishing off a Guadalupe feed leaving it at 10-10.
It took 2:47 to see the first shot of the final quarter when Beckett dished to Olsen for a goal and the 11-10 edge. Dickinson then recorded the next two chances with Barroll forcing Davidson into a save, while
Emma Wynne sent an attempt wide. With five minutes off the clock VanDorpe knocked away a blast from Shelby Graser which led to DC going back down the field and tying the score thanks to Wynne. The home side had the next four shots with one hitting the post and one from Beckett causing VanDorpe to make a save. Then with four minutes remaining Dickinson watched an offering from Wynne go wide, before Barroll gave the Devils their first lead of the day 12-11. Just over a minute later Hill buried a free-position chance to level things again. The Red and White had a chance to get the lead back with 66-seconds left, but Parker missed the target. However, on the ensuing groundball pickup by Barroll, Lee was assessed a yellow card giving DC a free-position chance. Herbert lined-up on the left hash and fired a shot between the legs of Davidson for the lead. Catholic appeared like they would have one final chance, but
Ali Broome knocked the ball loose from Hill allowing the Devils to run out the clock for the win.
