CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team fell behind 1-0 early in the first and after that never looked back as
Delaney Herbert tied things with two minutes left in the first en route to a 10-8 Centennial Conference win over Washington College at Biddle Field on Saturday.
Dickinson applied the early pressure with shots from
Liv Yeagle and
Emma Wynne both being denied by keeper Sydney Wingate. Washington had the next two chances with
Peyton VanDorpe having the answer for a Tobin Chambers shot at the 6:02 mark. After Yeagle was denied again by Wingate, Chambers would open the scoring on the ensuing possession. Off the ensuing draw control win Ellie Morrall tried to add on, but was best by VanDorpe. On the Devils next trip down the field both
Liz Barroll and
Riley Kuehn were stopped, before Herbert found the equalizer. Dickinson took their first lead with 1:21 left through Wynne and was able to hold onto the advantage thanks to a stop by VanDorpe at the horn.
The Red and White had the first two chances of the second, but neither Wynne or Barroll could hit the net. However, after a giveaway by Mia Salvatierra,
Faith Parker made it 3-1 with an unassisted marker. VanDorpe continued to be a thorn in the Shorewomen's side as she stopped Chambers in addition to causing a turnover by Morgan Sutherland. The home side continued to put the Washington defense under duress as Wynne hit the crossbar, while Barroll was denied by Wingate. That allowed WC to claim the momentum for a moment as Morrall missed the mark, before Sutherland snuck one home.
Caroline Pirone won the ensuing draw and watch her teammates Herbert and Wynne connect for the 4-2 advantage with three minutes left. The only other shot of the half came from Anna Wilson as VanDorpe beat away her offering to send things to the break.
The first three shots of the second half ripped the netting as Sutherland and Wilson tallied for the Shorewomen, while Yeagle finished off a dish from Barroll to leave DC on top 5-4 with four minutes gone. Wynne struck with another unassisted marker just over a minute later to make it 6-4. Another save from VanDorpe led to three more Devil shots with
Jenna Nowland hitting the back of the net for the 7-4 advantage with 6:23 to go. Two consecutive VanDorpe stops led to the Red and White holding onto the momentum with Parker cashing in at the 12:30 mark to open up a four-goal cushion. VanDorpe continued to be strong for the home side recording two more saves within the final minute to preserve the 8-4 lead to the fourth.
It took Dickinson just 1:37 into the quarter for Herbert to find Yeagle for the finish (9-4). Over the next eight minutes the Devils were held without a shot, while the visitors got goals from Ashley Devlin (2) and Morrall (2) to close within 9-8 still with 5:18 remaining. Dickinson then stopped the Shorewomen run and basically put the game away with tally from Barroll two minutes later to make it 10-8. The Devils defense was lockdown the rest of the way as they forced two Washington miscues to end the game.
