GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse found themselves down 8-2 after just 15-minutes and then were outscored 7-1 coming out of the break as the ninth-ranked Gettysburg College Bullets claimed a 21-8 Centennial Conference win on Wednesday afternoon at Clark Field.
The hosts were out of the gates fast as just 34-seconds in Emily Crane setup Gabi Connor for the first of the day. Then, just over a minute later Julia Daly tried to make it 2-0, but
Peyton VanDorpe had the answer. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the Bullets continued to add on tallying three more times in just over a minute span to open up a 4-0 cushion. After
Emma Norton collected the ensuing draw control,
Faith Parker found
Delaney Herbert for the finish beyond the reach of Gill Cortese. However, the home side got markers in response from Katie Fullowan and Crane to extend the margin to 6-1 with 9:25 to play prompting a DC timeout. VanDorpe would shutdown both Caroline Sullivan and Connor, while Cortese prevented Herbert from notching her second. Dickinson would be outshot 4-1 over the final five minutes as
Emma Wynne cashed in an unassisted goal, before Fullowan and Crane each added another tally prior to the end of the period to take an 8-2 lead into the second.Â
The Red and White came out like gangbusters to begin the second as
Caroline Pirone claimed the first two draw controls of the period, leading to goals from both
Liz Barroll and Herbet to close within 8-4 with two minutes gone. A save by VanDope on Daly gave DC a chance to really put a scare in the Bullets, but the transition attempt from Herbert went high of Cortese. Gettysburg then recorded the next five shots with Crane calling upon VanDorpe to make a stop, while Jordan Basso hit the back of the net for the 9-4 edge with six minutes remaining. After a turnover from Sullivan,
Mia Seergae picked up the loose ball and sent a pass ahead to Wynne who dodged around the defense and stuck the rock behind the keeper. Gettysburg responded twice over the ensuing minute thanks to Kelly O'Connor and Sullivan, but Parker finished off a dish from Herbert to cut it down to 11-6.
Liv Yeagle tried to keep the momentum rolling for DC heading into the third, but Cortese beat away the shot at the horn.
Juliette Devarenne took over between the pipes to start the third for the Bullets and watched her team tally three times within the opening two minutes extending the lead to 14-6. Devarenne recorded her first stop with 12:41 left when she denied Wynne. That led to the hosts firing the next five shots with VanDorpe making two more saves, while Gettysburg unfortunately added four more pushing the gap to 18-6 inside the final five minutes. Barroll and Wynne would each miss the target, before Devarenne shutdown Barroll within the last two minutes. Another VanDorpe save led to DC picking up their seventh of the day when Herbert found Yeagle for the goal making it 18-7 going to the fourth.Â
A miss by Barroll with two minutes gone in the period was the only DC shot over the first minutes as the Bullets notched two more to reach the 20-goal mark at 20-7. A win by Parker on the draw resulted in her hitting Yeagle for a finish. A yellow card handed out to Parker led to Basso tallying player-up to set the 21-8 final. However, Dickinson would task Devarenne into three more saves over the remainder of the game as she turned away
Syd MacKeigan,
Riley Kuehn and Yeagle.
