Devils Drop Home Opener in Straight Sets

CARLISLE, Pa. - After opening up the 2023 season with six-straight matches on the road the Dickinson volleyball team finally found themselves in the friendly confines of the Kline Center on Wednesday night for their Home Opener. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they were unable to overcome the visiting Gallaudet University as the Bisons picked up a 3-0 non-conference win.

The opening ten points would be shared by the two sides with Jessica Currie, Amelia Kim, Emma Popham and Eliette Whittaker tallying for the home side. After a kill from Ella Gamble, Dickinson got points from Mathilde Verbitsky, Currie and Popham during a 6-1 run to take an 11-7 advantage. Two kills each for Cassidy Perry and Anya Pothorski aided an 8-3 charge to nudge ahead 15-14. The game continued to "seesaw" back-and-forth with Alexa Barowski, Currie and Whittaker brought DC within 20-18. The Red and White then ripped off four in a row thanks to Kim and Popham to make it 22-20. However, a 5-1 Bison response ending on a Perry kill took the first 25-23.

Dickinson held an early 4-3 lead in the second on scores by Kim, Popham, Verbitsky and Whittaker. Five of the next nine went to the visitors with Natalie Clayberg, Leila Sicoli, Jada Zarembka and Perry accounting for the points to take an 8-6 edge. The Devils battled back to 13-13 on three kills by Kim and a block from Popham. Then for the second consecutive set the Red and White mounted a late run taking eight of the next ten through Currie, Kim, Verbitsky and Whittaker to claim a five-point cushion 21-16.  After the sides split the ensuing eight points, the Bison recorded seven straight to finish off another 25-23 win.

Gallaudet came out of the gates flying to start the third with Clayberg, Perry and Pothorski each recording scores to take a 10-5 advantage. Three Bison miscues and a Currie kill did not help DC to cut into the deficit as a kill from Citrine Lummer extended the guests lead to 16-9. GU continued to keep the Red and White at-bay 21-15, despite kills by Kim and Popham. Scores from Clayberg, Perry and Pothorski closed out the match at 25-17.
