CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team fought hard in all three sets on Saturday at home against the visiting Swarthmore College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams. Unfortunately, for the Red and White it would be the Garnet who came out on the positive side of a 3-0 win inside the Kline Center.
It was the Garnet who got off to a quick start as they took an early 6-2 lead, before three kills by
Amelia Kim and a single from both
Emma Popham and
Eliette Whittaker brought the Devils level at 7-7. A DC miscue started a 9-2 charge for the guests to open up a 16-9 advantage. Dickinson tried to fight back with scores from
Alexa Barowski,
Ann Marie Patterson, Kim, Popham and Whittaker to pull within 24-18. However, Trisha Razdan finished off a pass from Dani Pena to claim the first 25-18.
Five Swarthmore errors in the opening eleven points of the second handed the Devils a slim 5-3 edge. Once again though the Garnet had a response as a kill put down by Kim along with three SC mistakes accounted for the Dickinson points during a 9-3 visitors run to go ahead 12-8. The home side then mounted a huge charge as scores from Barowski, Kim, Patterson and Popham led a 12-3 push to open up a five-point cushion 20-15. The Garnet did not go down quietly taking the ensuing eight points to jump back ahead 23-20. Barowski and Whittaker brought the Devils back to even 24-24, before a Barowski ace brought DC to the edge of grabbing the set. Unfortunately, kills by Alexia Enache and Angelina Heminway brought the Garnet back for the 27-25 win.
The two sides traded first six points of the third to be tied at 3-3, before kills from Enache, Heminway, Larson, and Zhang accounted for 10 of the next 13 for the 13-6 advantage.
Mathilde Verbitsky, Barowski, Kim and Popham helped the Red and White to battle back to 18-14. A pair of kills for Razdan allowed Swarthmore to grab three of the next four making it 21-15. Three Garnet errors along with a Popham score cut the deficit to 22-19. However, kills from Pena and Zhang would be enough for the visitors to come up with the 25-20 victory.
