Devils Drop Conference Contest to Diplomats

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson field hockey went in search of a 2-0 start to Centennial Conference play on Wednesday afternoon hosting the rival Franklin & Marshall College at the Biddle Field Complex. Unfortunately for the Red and White, the visitors tallied one goal each in both the first and second quarters to secure a 2-0 win.

The opening six minutes were played in the middle of the pitch with neither side able to venture into the attacking third. It would take until 6:37 to see the first corner of the match when Amelia McCarthy played the ball into the circle, but it did not amount to a shot coming towards Olivia Renault in the DC cage. However, just over two minutes later it would be 1-0 F&M as Jessica Miller carried the ball down the right and found Caitlin Hoover who placed it on the stick of Keira Boensch for the finish. The Diplomats added four more shots in the period, but Renault tallied two saves to keep the score where it was.

The second quarter also saw F&M have the better of the action as they recorded the only five chances of the frame tasking Renault with two more stops. Unfortunately, the Devils could not escape the period unscathed as Darby Klopp picked up the ball in the area and spun off a defender allowing her to pick the top corner for the 2-0 advantage going into halftime.

To begin the third Dickinson would make a change in net as Taylor Schlein took over between the pipes. She had to wait less than a minute to see a shot come her way when Miller ripped one wide of the frame with 46-seconds gone. The rest of the quarter was a battle of the defenses as the remaining 14:14 was contested without another shot being recorded.

The Red Devils applied the early pressure in the fourth as they tried to work their way back into the match earning their first corner of the match in the 51st-minute when Abby Marthins found Morgan Yandow-Harding for the shot, but it was blocked down by the Diplomat defense. Two minutes later another corner resulted in two more chances. However, both A. Marthins and Sammi Moonay were unable to bother Meghan Dole. Schlein then became quite busy between minutes 55 and 58 as she posted a trio of saves denying Carolina Riley and McCarthy (2). The Red and White had one more chance to get on the board with 1:51 left when a penalty stroke was awarded. Unfortunately, the offering by Becca Woods went just to the left of the goal allowing F&M to close out the win.
