Tough Second Half Lets Blue Jays Fly Past Devils

CARLISLE, Pa. - For 20 minutes it seemed like the Dickinson men's basketball team and the visiting Johns Hopkins University were destined to go down to the wire on Tuesday night at the Kline Center. The Red and White trailed by just three at the break (39-36), but then shot just 6-for-29 from the floor over the second period to allow the Blue Jays to leave central Pennsylvania with a 75-51 Centennial Conference win.

Things could not have started better for the Devils as Isaiah Edmond, Anthony Goeb and Nate Ogbu had the home side on top 11-2 with just over four minutes gone. The Jays responded with a three-point barrage as Brayden Fagbemi, Charlie Jackson, Carson James and John Windley delivered from distance during a 14-2 outburst for the 16-13 edge at the 10:01 mark. Seven points by Ogbu along with three on the charity line for Skyler Venezia over a three-minute span sent DC back ahead 23-18. Windley then became the entire offense for Hopkins for the next 120-seconds scoring the 11 points for the Jays, while Matt Mahoney, Edmond and Ogbu tallied for the Devils leaving it at 31-30 guests. Free throws and a jumper by Edmond helped the hosts to stay within striking distance as Will Sykes, Sidney Thybulle, James and Windley were able to keep the Jays ahead 39-36 at the break.

Dickinson had major struggles hitting the bottom of the net early in the second as the Red and White went 2-for-14 over the opening ten minutes with Cole Cosby accounting for the only two DC buckets. However, while the Devils were going cold Hopkins was heating up with Will Stevenson, Fagbemi, James and Thybulle all scoring to stretch the lead out to 60-40. After the Jays racked up nine more in a row, Mahoney and Ogbu combined for seven consecutive to close within 69-47 with three minutes to go. Aaron Bailey and Goeb supplied the remaining offense for the home side over the rest of the game to set the 75-51 result.
