No. 15 Bears Claw Past Devils to End Puerto Rico Trip

CAGUAS, P.R. - The Dickinson women's basketball team hung tough early on Sunday morning against the 15th-ranked Washington University (Mo.), but ultimately did not have enough as the Bears knocked off the Red and White 63-45 at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza in the Devils final game in Puerto Rico.

  • The game was tied at 4-4 through the opening four minutes with Mia Chapman and Clair Marion picking up the points for DC.
  • A 5-2 Bears run opened it up 9-6, but a Jenna Weinstein layup capped the scoring for the frame at 9-8.
Template - 2nd Quarter
  • Jessica Brooks began the frame with a three, before Caitlin Blackman and Lizzie McGrath trimmed the gap to just one again (14-13) with 2:28 gone.
  • Another bucket for Brooks kicked off a 13-2 spurt for WashU as a Marion layup was the only Devils points making the score 27-15 just under two minutes left.
  • An "old-fashioned" three-point play for Marion would make it 28-18 going to the break.

  • WashU continued to build onto their advantage early in the period as Lexy Harris and Alyssa Harris combined for seven of the first ten points stretching the advantage to 35-19.
  • The duo of Blackman and Weinstein tried to keep Dickinson within range trimming one off the margin over the next two minutes (40-25).
  • Following a triple by Brooks, Clare Cronley, Blackman, Chapman and Marion tallied seven of the final nine to make it 45-33 with ten minutes to play.
Template - 4th Quarter
  • A Blackman pull-up jumper and three-ball for McGrath continued to give DC hope at 49-38 with just 1:27 gone.
  • Victoria Zerbe collected the only Devils points during a 10-2 Bears romp to open up a 59-40 edge with half the period to play.
  • Gabby Smelcer, McGrath and Weinstein each found the bottom of the bucket over the remainder of the quarter setting the 63-45 result.
