CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got goals from eight different players and buried the rock eight times in the opening 15 minutes to build up a commanding 8-2 lead en route to a 15-7 non-conference season opening win over the visiting Lebanon Valley College at Biddle Field.
The visitors looked to take advantage of a win on the opening draw of the game, but
Peyton VanDorpe turned away Bethany Cohee just 50 seconds in. That led to Dickinson scoring on their opening three shots of the game as
Syd MacKeigan found
Delaney Herbert, before MacKeigan finished off a dish by
Faith Parker. Then, with 11:54 left in the period
Abby Geary posted her first collegiate goal beating Jamie Handwerger (Herbert assist). Lebanon Valley responded less than a minute later when Anna Lougee netted the first of the year for the Dutchmen, but Dickinson answered through
Bella Guckes at the 8:11 mark to make it 4-1. After Emily Beard cut it down to 4-2, it was all about the Red and White over the final three minutes as
Carson Cerow (first collegiate goal),
Jenna Nowland, Guckes and Herbert all beat the keeper stretching the lead to six 8-2 through one.
The first five minutes of period number two saw the Devils take three of the opening four shots with Geary and Guckes (2) accounting for the chances. Following two off the mark offerings from Erin Zieber, a foul by Hayley Cowles led to a DC free-position attempt which was converted by Geary (9-2). LVC would control the remainder of the frame outshooting the Devils 5-2 over the last seven minutes with Alyssa Wene (2) and Lougee cashing in, while Geary missed the target and Nowland was stopped by Handwerger to send the game to the half at 9-5.
Dickinson began the third quarter by tallying their tenth marker of the day as
Sage Whiteside struck with her first goal of the season and her college career. Then, over the next four-plus minutes each team was only able to muster one shot with Beard going wide and Herbert having her shot saved by Handwerger to hold the margin at 10-5 with five minutes off the clock. At the 5:30 mark, it became 11-5 when VanDorpe collected a loose ball and got it up to Herbert who buried the offering. Three minutes later ti was Herbert who turned provider linking up with Guckes for the finish (12-5). The Red and White would add one more to their total prior to the end of the frame through Whiteside (
Liz Barroll assist).
Handwerger kicked off the fourth with a stop on Barroll, which allowed the Dutchmen to race back down the field and cash in thanks to Beard with just over a minute gone. VanDorpe attempted to make that the final goal she would allow on the afternoon as turned aside shots from Beard and Wene to hold things at 13-5. With five minutes gone in the period
Izzy Hall knocked the ball out of the stick of Lougee resulting in a shot by Geary which was saved. However, on the ensuing clear attempt for LVC Hana Neff had a pass picked off by Barroll and hustled back in to the attacking area before being fired to the back of the net making it 14-6. The visitors took advantage of a win on the following draw control with Beard finding Morgan for the tally. A yellow card to Maddie Young led to the last goal of the game with Herbert scoring on the power play to set the 15-7 final.
