PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Dickinson women's lacrosse got multiple goals from four different players, including a career-high five goals from
Bella Guckes and the all important overtime winner by
Sage Whiteside to kickoff their Spring Break trip in Florida in grand style with a 16-15 non-conference win over the SUNY Geneseo Knights at Publix Field.
Geneseo was on the attack early with Molly Brown being denied by
Peyton VanDorpe early, before both Alaina Reina and Maira Brennan handed the Knights a 2-0 lead with five minutes gone. The Red and White finally recorded their first shots of the game through
Liz Barroll and
Delaney Herbert, but Emily DeJohn closed the door each time. Dickinson got onto the board for the first time at the 9:52 mark when
Bella Guckes finished off a pass from
Faith Parker. Unfortunately, Geneseo would recorded the remaining four shots of the period scoring once more thanks to Reegan Vorgang to make it 3-1 after one.
The Devils were on fire to open up the second with Barroll and Guckes netting free-position markers to level the game at 3-3 just over two minutes in. Off the ensuing draw control Emily Salanger cashed in, but was answered three minutes later when
Abby Geary buried the rock. The two sides then exchanged four goals with Sophie Lyko and Brown scoring for the Knights, while Barroll bagged two more for DC to finish off her hat trick (6-6) with 11:19 off the clock. For the second straight quarter the final couple of minutes would belong to Geneseo as they tallied the last five shots of the frame adding three more to their total for a 9-6 halftime lead.
A save by VanDorpe on Salanger just 1:48 into the third allowed the Red and White to race back to the other end of the field where Herbert took advantage of a free-position chance to trim one off the gap. The continued to gain momentum as VanDorpe collected two more stops, prior to Herbert picking up her second free-position goal of the quarter (9-8). Salanger claimed the ensuing draw control, but immediately turned it over when
Sage Whiteside jarred the ball free. That allowed her to corral the loose ball and feed it ahead to Barroll who deposited the ball beyond the reach of DeJohn to knot the score. Whiteside followed up by winning the draw and watching Herbert be denied by DeJohn, before Geary found Whiteside for the 10-9 lead still with six minutes left. Molly Brown would then pull the Knights back ahead with a pair of goals in a two-minute stretch (11-10). However, Dickinson got back on level terms in the final minute as
Caroline Cavendish tracked down the groundball after Salanger hit the pipe, which let her get the ball ahead to Barroll who hit Guckes for the tying marker going to the fourth.
Things could not have begun worse for DC as Geneseo scored twice in the opening 90-seconds for a 13-11 lead. Following a stop by VanDorpe on Reina, the Devils responded offensively with goals from
Emma Wynne and Herbert (Barroll assist) making it 13-13. The Knights then repeated the feat four minutes later when DeJohn turned away Wynne leading to finishes for both Brennan and Brown to reclaim a 15-13 advantage with 6:35 to play. Dickinson then went to work on the defensive end forcing two Geneseo giveaways allowing Geary to run the length of the field and find Guckes for a goal, before she added another one inside the final minute to tie the score (15-15). The Knights got one last look with just six-ticks left, but VanDorpe denied Reina to force overtime.
It would take just over a minute for the Devils to leave the field with the win as Brown took the opening draw, but had it taken away by
Ali Broome. As the Red and White settled into an offensive set Whiteside was given a free-position shot, which she fired past DeJohn for the winner. Â
