CARLISLE, Pa. - Despite hat tricks from
Abby Geary and
Emma Wynne the Dickinson women's lacrosse team dropped their second consecutive game by a final of 15-10 to the visiting Catholic University Cardinals on the slick Biddle Field turf thanks to a persistent rain that fell throughout Saturday afternoon.
In just three minutes there were four combined scores as
Bella Guckes and
Faith Parker tallied for Dickinson, while Riley Martin and Maggie Traynor had things locked at 2-2. The home side recorded two of the next three shots through
Liz Barroll and Geary, but it would be Catholic that struck for the lead when Mattea Del Peschio beat
Peyton VanDorpe. However, a green card to Ellie Verrill and a yellow given to Rachel Rubenstein allowed for the Red and White to collect a pair of power play markers from Geary and Wynne to give DC a 4-3 lead with seven minutes gone. The Cardinals did answer back before the end of the period with goals by Madeline Kelly and Martin to carry a one-goal lead into the second.
Catholic continued to ride that momentum into the early part of period two with Lindsay Swayer and Tori Wilsey joining the scoresheet less than three minutes in to stretch the lead to 7-4. Of the ensuing draw control win by
Caroline Pirone, the Devils chipped one off the deficit when
Delaney Herbert his Guckes for the finish past Lauren Davidson to make it 7-5. That also prompted a change between the pipes for DC as
Sierra McLaughlin took over for VanDorpe. Unfortunately, she was greeted quite rudely as Mia Perkell put one behind her just 30-seconds into her appearance. Dickinson then attempted to right the ship firing five of the next six shots with
Sage Whiteside, Barroll and Guckes going wide, while Geary and Herbert bested Davidson to cut the margin to just one (8-7) still with four-plus minutes left. Catholic answered back with the final two tallies of the frame to take a 10-7 edge to the break.
VanDorpe returned between the sticks for the Devils to kickoff the third and watched a shot from Sawyer sail wide of her net less than a minute in. The home responded with attempts by Whiteside and Wynne forcing one stop out of Davidson, while at the other end of the field Kelly was denied by VanDorpe to keep things at 10-7 with ten minutes off the clock. Over the next two minutes the Cardinals extended their advantage with markers from Izzy Fiore and Wilsey to push it out to 12-7. Dickinson would get two more chances in the period as both Barroll and Wynne had their offerings miss the target sending the contest to the fourth.Â
It took a little over two minutes to see the opening shot of the fourth when a foul by Rubenstein resulted in a free-position chance for Wynne which she put past Davidson. After Pirone claimed the ensuing draw control the rock made its way to Wynne who slipped a pass across the top of the crease to Geary for the finish trimming it down to 12-9 at the 2:50 mark. Catholic would add onto their advantage with goals from Jill Kennedy, Del Peschio and Wilsey making the gap 15-9 inside the final four minutes. Wynne buried another free-position chance with just under two minutes remaining, but the Devils final shot of the contest from Whiteside was knocked to the side by Davidson to set the 15-10 final.Â
