Defense Provides Spark as Devils Spoil Homecoming for Green Terror

WESTMINSTER, Md. - After a heartbreaking loss last weekend the Dickinson football team got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon as they knocked off the host McDaniel College by a score of 23-20 at Gill Stadium. The defense was a key contributor in the Red Devils victory as they forced four turnovers on the day cashing in on one directly with a 45-yard interception return by Joshua Moses in the third quarter.

First Quarter
  • McDaniel had the first possession of the game and it lasted six plays, before ending up in a 20-yard punt by Braden Fritz giving the Devils their first chance starting on their own 36. Unfortunately, for DC the offense only was out there for three plays as Ben Klassen had his third down pass picked by Bryce Allen putting them in business at the DC37.
  • Two runs by Jacob Wagner pushed the hosts down to DC22, but they ultimately came away with no points when Fritz was unable to connect on a 42-yard field goal. Dickinson opened up the ensuing drive with a ten-yard carry by Dane Sorensen (DC32). However, on the following play Klassen was intercepted by Christian Homer who raced it all the way home for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after one (Braden Fritz kick).
Second Quarter
  • Following a defensive stand by the Red and White on fourth-and-four at their own 33, Sorensen kicked things off with a 22-yard carry. Then a rush by Klassen of 16 and a pass interference penalty had the Devils setup on the MCD13. Sorensen would then carry for 11 down to the two, before plunging home on the next play to tie the game at 7-7 (Justin Worobel kick).
  • The Green Terror began their drive with a 34-yard pass from Jayden Booker to Grayson Wendel putting them at the DC36. A run by Micajah Cobbs and reception for Logan Marsh brought the home team to the DC4. That was when Cobbs gave McDaniel the lead back with a four-yard carry pushing the edge to 13-7 with 9:50 left (Braden Fritz kick no good).
  • Later in the period Dickinson was back on offense and through three touches by Sorensen and a six-yard snag from Liam Kallen the Devils were approaching midfield resting on the DC47. A 20-yard catch for Kellen Boyer and rush from Sorensen had the guests on the edge of the red zone at the MCD20. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the drive came to an abrupt end when Kendrick Williams picked off Klassen in the end zone with less than two minutes remaining.
  • McDaniel's final drive saw a 30-yard completion from Booker to Grayson Wendel gave the Green Terror a chance to get some points, but Fritz's 52-yard field goal attempt missed as time expired allowing McDaniel to take a 13-7 lead into halftime.
Third Quarter
  • Dickinson began the opening drive of the half in McDaniel territory on the MCD48 thanks to a 44-yard kickoff return by Keesean Campbell. A 15-yard carry by Cedric Benning III and a pass interference penalty immediately had DC in the red zone at the MCD8. The five-play drive came to an end when Benning III ran it into the house from eight away giving Dickinson a 14-13 edge (Justin Worobel kick).
  • McDaniel used receptions for Jalen Young and Wendel as well as three carries by Wagner to get up to the DC22. Booker then raced around the right side for 15 yards down to DC7. However, the Green Terror's march got cut shot when on third down Booker was intercepted by Sean Couvertiere for a touchback.
  • After the Red and White went three-and-out the home side opened their next drive on the MCD37. Fourtunately though for Dickinson the possession only lasted one play as Booker was picked off by Moses who scampered 45 yards to pay dirt for the 21-13 advantage with 5:22 left (Justin Worobel kick).
  • The ensuing home opportunity also only lasted one play as Wagner had the ball punched out by Juan Pablo Garcia which was then ultimately recovered by Joaquin Acuna at the MCD40. Dickinson would not be able to cash in going three-and-out leading to a punt by Michael Furlong down to MCD1.
  • That was once again when the defense for the Devils showed up as Valdemar Enghave stuffed Cobbs for no gain on first down. Then on second down, Acuna blew through the line and dropped Booker in the end zone for a safety and the 23-13 advantage after three.
Fourth Quarter
  • Three minutes into the frame Dickinson started a drive on the DC38. Two carries for Benning III as well as a reception by the same player put the Devils at the midfield stripe. The next seven plays were all on the ground with Benning III toting the rock four times, while Sorensen ran it three times advancing the ball to the MCD17. The DC march hit the brakes on the following play as Klassen was picked by Bryce Allen.
  • McDaniel then used a 13-play passing only drive that went 93 yards over a 4:01 span ending with a 29-yard touchdown reception by Marsh on a pass from Booker to bring the hosts within three 23-20 with 82-seconds to go.
  • Dickinson would not be able to kill off the game giving the Green Terror a last ditch effort to seize a win starting at their own five inside of a minute left. On first down Couvertiere broke up a pass intended for Marsh. Then, two plays later Domani White not only sacked Booker, but popped the ball free leading to a recovery for Acuna to end the game.
