BALTIMORE - After back-to-back games scoring 50-plus points the Dickinson football team returned to action on Friday night visiting the third-ranked Johns Hopkins University in the Centennial Conference opener for both sides. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the Blue Jays jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and never looked back posting a 55-10 win at Homewood Field.
First Quarter
- Things started rough for the Red and White as Ben Klassen had his first pass of the game picked off by Jack Schondelmayer. That set JHU up on the DC23 and five plays later Geoff Schroeder plunged in from five out for the 7-0 lead (Brad Paxton kick).
- Following a three-and-out series by Dickinson, Blue Jays quarterback Bay Harvey connected with Cole Crotty for 21 yards to the DC35, before two plays later hitting Josh Moore 26-yards downfield for a touchdown and a 14-0 edge with 6:12 left (Brad Paxton kick).
- Hopkins continued to keep the Devils offense quiet as a pair of Cedric Benning III runs netted five yards forcing another Michael Furlong punt..After a 37-yard punt and a 34-yard return by Alex Orecchio the home side set up on the DC30. From there they needed one play to extend the margin with Chad Martini finding Robby Enright for the score (Brad Paxton kick).
- Dickinson would make it across midfield on the ensuing drive thanks to an 18-yard pass to Kellen Boyer and a nine-yard Klassen keeper, but things would stall out on the JHU41 leading to another punt. Â
Second Quarter
- After starting on their own 20, a 40-yard pass to Crotty and a pair of runs had the Jays at the DC36 to begin the frame. Two plays into the period it went to 28-0 when Schroeder broke free around the left side from 17 yards away (Brad Paxton kick).
- A sack of Klassen during the ensuing DC possession stalled the Devils offense again putting back in the hosts hands own their own 43. Harvey once again used a long pass to find the endzone as he hit Crotty from 32 out (Brad Paxton kick).
- A pass to Boyer of nine yards and rush by Klassen pushed the Red and White across the 50 to the JHU49. However, on third-and-ten a sack of Klassen caused the visitors to punt it back to the Blue Jays.
- Tackles from Joaquin Acuna, Chris Barnes, Juan Pablo Garcia and Jimmy Mulholland helped the Devils to force JHU into a punt for the first time. Unfortunately, for Dickinson they went three-and-out thanks to another sack of Klassen on third down.
- Hopkins just continued to pile on as Harvey found Crotty for completions of 46 and 10 to get down to the DC9 with two minutes left. The half ended with Schroeder running it in from four out (Brad Paxton kick).Â
Third Quarter
- As was the case on the first play of the game there would be a turnover as Harvey attempted a scramble, but lost the ball allowing Julien Devlin to fall on it putting the Devils at the JHU31. Passes to Kevin Schmidt and Benning III set the stage for Benning III to take it home from three yards out to make it 42-7 (Justin Worobel kick).
- Unfortunately, for Dickinson the Blue Jays embarked on a nine-play drive that ended with Harvey once again finding Crotty for a touchdown from six-yards out (Brad Paxton kick). Hopkins would add three more on the final possession of the frame on a 26-yard field goal by Paxton.
Fourth Quarter
- A 27-yard run by Klassen started things and then two passes to Boyer and one to Schmidt pushed DC down to the Jays 17-yardline. A nine-yard rush put the Devils on the JHU8, but a false start and sack forced a field goal try. Worobel would come out to attempt the 32-yard kick which he knocked through with 9:29 left. Hopkins would add one more field goal about halfway into the period to cap the scoring at 55-10.
