Devils Best Bears in Conference Lid-Lifter

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team played a pair of close sets to start their Centennial Conference opener on Saturday afternoon against the visiting Ursinus College Bears. However, the Red and White took control in the third and fourth set to claim a 3-1 win inside the Kline Center.

First Set
  • The Bears got out to a quick 8-3 lead thanks to kills for Mel Eglinton, Alonna McCummings and Reena Robinson.
  • Three straight UC errors trimmed the margin to 8-6, before Lauren McGinn and Eglinton stretched the margin to 14-7.
  • Dickinson responded quite nicely with kills from Jessica Currie, Lora Flynn, Emery Fishbach, Amelia Kim, Mallie Thomas and Eliette Whittaker capping a 9-4 push to get within 18-16.
  • A McCummings score and three DC miscues allowed UC to stay ahead 22-20, but Avery Butcher, Currie, Kim and Whittaker took five of the next six for the 25-23 win.
Second Set
  • Things were tight early as kills put down by Currie, Fishbach, Thomas and Whittaker had the score at 7-7.
  • Back-to-back home mistakes kicked off a 7-3 charge for the Bears to make it 14-10.
  • Two Kim kills and solos by Currie, Thomas and Whittaker kept the Devils fighting at 18-15.
  • Lexi Couch stalled the DC charge for a second, before Fishbach, Kim and Thomas embarked on an 8-2 run ending on a Currie kill to grab a 23-21 advantage.
  • However, the Bears clawed back with the next four point to take the set 25-23.
Third Set
  • Aces for Katie Arcara and kills by Currie, Flynn, Kim and Thomas opened up a 9-7 edge.
  • Two of the next three went to UC, before Caroline Cusson and Currie combined to extend the lead to 15-10.
  • Scores from Couch and Robinson cut the deficit to just two, but a trio of Kim kills and pair slammed home by Thomas made it 22-14 home side.
  • Five points later Thomas closed things out with a thunderous kill (25-16).
Fourth Set
  • The Devils seized control from the jump as three aces for Amanda Palo helped the hosts to an early 7-1 edge.
  • Despite the Bears fighting hard scores by Currie, Kim and Thomas had DC doubling up the guests at 14-7.
  • Consecutive kills for Robinson gave UC some hope at 14-9, but then Camille Dofiles, Arcara, Currie, and Thomas stretched the gap to double-digits (22-12).
  • Erin Dychdala, Zoe George and Eglinton kept on battling briging the score to 24-17, prior to Thomas finishing off the match with another kill.
