Slow Start Pushes Devils Back to .500 at Thanksgiving Break

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team hoped to head into the Thanksgiving break on a positive by knocking off the visiting Shenandoah University inside the Kline Center on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, for the Red and White despite 23 points from Mia Chapman they were unable to dig out of a 43-25 halftime deficit falling to the Hornets by a score of 72-60.

First Quarter
  • Things started quite well for the visitors as they opened up on a 12-0 run over the first 4:41 as Addisyn Banks and Emily Williams were the major contributors.
  • Over the next two minutes four points by Chapman along with a triple from Lizzie McGrath helped put the home side within 15-7.
  • Buckets for Mya Martin, Brynna Nesselrodt and Banks stretched the gap back to 22-7 inside of two minutes left.
  • Two each by Clare Cronley, Victoria Zerbe and McGrath cut the margin to 24-13 after one.
Second Quarter
  • The Hornets continued to soar early as they grabbed six of the first eight thanks to the duo of Skai Bayless and Jessica Littlejohn to make it 30-15.
  • However, Dickinson attempted to fight back as McGrath setup Cronley for a three-pointer and a jumper just outside the paint, while Chapman converted in the paint closing the score to 30-22 with 5:45 to go.
  • A three ball knocked down by Williams kicked off a 13-3 romp for the visitors throughout the rest of the frame to give the guests a 43-25 advantage at the break.
Third Quarter
  • The opening five minutes of the period once again saw DC try to rally with baskets from Chapman and Cronley trimming the gap to 45-32.
  • The sides traded the ensuing eight points with tallies coming out of the hands of Leah Dubin and Emma Landes both off passes from Zerbe (49-36).
  • Points by Chapman and Zerbe allowed the Devils to continue to push, but a buzzer-beating jumper drilled by Banks made it 53-41 with a frame to go.
Fourth Quarter
  • A layup for Chapman and a trey knocked down by McGrath held the gap at 58-46 with 2:12 gone.
  • Dickinson would unfortunately miss their next five shots, before Cronley connected with Chapman to halt the cold streak (58-48).
  • A 6-3 run started and capped off by Bayless made it 64-51 with 3:51 left.
  • The Devils got buckets from Esther Nlebemuo, Cronley, McGrath and Zerbe down the stretch, but it was not enough as the Hornets closed out the 72-60 win.
