Devils Lead Early, but Stung by Yellow Jackets in Opener

CARLISLE, Pa. - Things could not have started much better for the Dickinson women's basketball team on Saturday evening in the season opener against Randolph-Macon College as Mia Chapman scored the first dozen points of the game en route to giving the Red and White a 20-9 lead after one. However, the Yellow Jackets never gave up the fight and ultimately rallied past the Devils by a final of 68-59 inside the Kline Center.

First Quarter
  • As mentioned in was the "Chapman Show" early on as she lifted DC to a 12-0 lead with five minutes gone.
  • After missing their opening five shots, the visitors finally got on the board at the 5:23 mark when Sam Smith finished off a layup in the lane.
  • The first triple of the season for Clare Cronley and two at the line from Chapman opened the margin to 17-2.
  • Morgan Miller kicked off a 7-3 romp for RMC to end the frame as a three-pointer by Leah Dubin accounted for the lone DC bucket.
Second Quarter
  • The period began with Jelena Subasic collecting her first points in a Dickinson uniform by knocking home a three off a dish from Cronley.
  • Both McKenzie Matheny and Erin Porter recorded a layup to cut the margin to 23-13, but two more treys and a layup from Subasic pushed the DC advantage to 33-17 with 5:08 gone.
  • Buckets from Miller, Porter and Smith aided an 8-3 push for the Jackets to get within 36-25.
  • Zerbe and Matheny would trade layups inside the final minute to leave it 38-27 at halftime.
Third Quarter
  • Two points each for Chapman and Cronley helped DC to extend the advantage to 42-27 less than a minute in.
  • The Yellow Jackets would chop the lead to single digits by the three minute mark with scores for Emion Byers and Porter making it 42-34.
  • Dickinson used free throws for Victoria Zerbe, Cronley and Dubin to bump the margin back to ten at 46-36 with 4:30 to go.
  • Eight points by Porter contributed to a 14-4 flight for the visitors to level the game at 50-50 through three quarters.
Fourth Quarter
  • A pair of free throws out of the hands of Emma Landes moved the home side on top early, but jumpers by Madison Langdon and Matheny got RMC in front 54-52 with 7:45 left.
  • Lizzie McGrath drilled a three-pointer for a 55-54 edge, before Byers, Miller and Porter ran off nine straight (63-55).
