Summer Check-In
Where are you working/interning this summer? Company and Location.
District of Columbia Superior Court
Please describe your day-to-day responsibilities in this position.
I work with a team of law clerks and other interns to prepare and manage DC misdemeanor cases. We navigate through case files and court documents to make sure our judge is prepared for hearings and trials, and ensure that all necessary information is updated and organized. We also get to sit in on hearings and provide live updates on cases directly from court.
What made this experience appealing to you?
I knew this would be an amazing opportunity to gain hands-on experience, learning from a highly respected judge and law clerks about the ins and outs of the court and judicial decision-making processes. Aside from working in chambers, I’ve also had the opportunity to learn from judges in other divisions, including those working in the DC Court of Appeals.
How does this experience relate to your career or life aspirations? What are you looking to personally get out of it?
As a student considering a career in law and possibly attending law school, seeing firsthand the processes of the law through a judicial setting is so enriching. Also, I feel so lucky to work with people who are at all different points in their careers, learning from peers who are currently going through law school and mentors who have been through it all.
How has your athletics career prepared you for this role?
Being an athlete has helped me develop so many skills such as discipline, communication, and resilience, which are invaluable to this role as well as any career. This experience has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone, but I’ve been able to learn quickly and adapt to a fast-paced environment while constantly looking to improve and incorporate feedback into my work.
What are you looking forward to for this upcoming year for your sport?
I can’t wait to be back training and competing with my team in the spring and continue the success we had this past year!
Is there anything else you are looking forward to this summer outside of this experience?
I’m looking forward to preparing to spend my semester abroad in Italy this fall!
