Lehigh Valley Health Network Summer Scholar program based in Allentown, Pennsylvania
Please describe your day-to-day responsibilities in this position.
My primary responsibilities include maintaining and updating a database on concussed patients. Our team will query this database to determine the impact of various treatments on concussions outcomes. Our goal is to publish our findings. The program has weekly workshops that allow me to learn more about the medical field. Lastly, program participants have the opportunity to shadow numerous hospital physicians to help educate us on the different roles and responsibilities of different medical specialties.
What made this experience appealing to you?
As a biochemistry major, I am exceedingly interested in science. This internship allows me to perform research to gain a better understanding of medical research. Furthermore, this allows me to put to practice what I have learned in the classroom.
How does this experience relate to your career or life aspirations? What are you looking to personally get out of it?
As a pre-med student, gaining as much experience in the field of medicine in crucial. This internship allows me to perform medical research as well as spend the summer shadowing different physicians to help me determine what field of medicine I enjoy the most.
How has your athletics career prepared you for this role?
As a long-distance runner, discipline, resilience, teamwork and leadership are all important. Throughout this internship we learn about the challenges of clinical research and the need for perseverance, which is how a distance runner improves.
What are you looking forward to for this upcoming year for your sport?
Hosting the Mid-East Regional cross country meet to battle for a spot to go to NCAA Nationals.
Is there anything else you are looking forward to this summer outside of this experience?
This summer the Dickinson cross-country team is taking a trip to Portugal. While in Portugal we will have the opportunity experience a different culture, compete internationally, and bond as a team.
