Devils Nipped by Tartans in the Steel City

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Dickinson women's basketball team battled hard all afternoon, but ultimately fell just short of erasing a 34-21 halftime deficit as the host Carnegie Mellon University held on for a slim 62-59 non-conference win inside the Highmark Center.

First Quarter
  • Buckets from Mia Chapman and Clare Cronley were the only points for the visitors early as the home side jumped out to a 12-4 edge with five minutes gone.
  • Layups by Emma Landes and Chapman coupled with a triple for Addison Cadwell trimmed the margin to 14-11 just over three minutes to play.
  • However, four points by Allie Heyer and a jumper stuck by Shelby Lewis bumped the gap to 20-11 less than a minute later.
  • Dickinson ended the period with tallies from Cadwell and Cronley to close within 20-15 heading to the second.
Second Quarter
  • Points were hard to come by early in the frame as a layup for Cadwell and single foul shot from Leah Dubin left the gap at 23-18.
  • Following a layup finished off by Lewis the teams went scoreless over the next four-plus minutes until Savannah Gibbs bumped it out to 27-18.
  • A long range effort for Lizzie McGrath stopped the push for a second, but the trio of Nicole Timko, Gibbs and Lewis scored seven straight to make it 34-21 at halftime.
Third Quarter
  • McGrath continued to be the "hot hand" for the Devils picking up the first five points cutting it down to 34-26 not even a minute in.
  • After an Aleena Dinker jumper stymied the charge for a moment, two more McGrath triple closed the score to six (38-32) with just more than five minutes remaining.
  • Contributions from Esther Nlebemuo and Cadwell kept the gap at six (42-36), before a three-ball for McGrath coupled with a Cadwell free throw made it 44-40 inside the final minute.
  • Unfortunately, for the Red and White a Timko layup at the horn pushed the lead to 46-40.
Fourth Quarter
  • For the second straight period it was DC that got out to a quick start as the they opened on an 8-2 gallop thanks to buckets from Victoria Zerbe, Cadwell and Dubin knotting the score at 48.
  • However, the Tartans had an immediate response with two Timko triples kicking off a 10-2 outburst to take a 58-50 edge with 3:32 to go.
  • The home team continued to hold the Red and White at-bay coming down the stretch as they held a 62-53 advantage with 1:42 left, but treys from Cronley and McGrath closed it to three (62-59).
  • Coming out of a timeout, Dinker missed a game sealing jumper as Zerbe swatted the ball away leading to a potential game-tying shot for Zerbe that fell just short.
