VB - Devils Start Texas Trip With Four Set Defeat to Yellow Jackets

SEGUIN, Texas - The Dickinson volleyball team began their fall break in Texas on Friday night with a 3-1 setback to Howard Payne University inside Memorial Gymnasium on the campus of Texas Lutheran University. The Red and White opened the match with a two-point win in set one, but were unable to maintain that momentum as the Yellow Jackets rallied back to win the next three. Kylie Schner paced the Devils with 11 kills on the day.

First Set
  • Things were tight early on as points for Caroline Cusson and Emery Fishbach had the score locked at 7-7.
  • Kills for Jessica Currie and Fishbach accounted for the DC tallies during an 8-3 charge by HPU to jump ahead 17-10.
  • Dickinson then embarked on a 10-1 run with kills coming from Mallie Thomas, Currie, Cusson and Schner (20-18).
  • Points for Tara Bennett, Sydnie Mullens and Addison Roden brought HPU to the verge of grabbing the set at 24-22.
  • However, an ace by Avery Butcher and kills for the duo of Cusson and Thomas helped DC complete the rally 27-25.
Second Set
  • The setting tandem of Lilith Roman and Brenna Williams setup scores by Currie, Schner and Thomas. Unfortunately, it left the Devils down 13-5.
  • Two Cusson kills and singles for Currie and Schner cut it down to 16-11.
  • HPU then got a kill by Madai Suarez to spark a 9-1 romp to take the set 25-12.
Third Set
  • The Yellow Jackets took an early 10-5 edge despite points for Currie, Fishbach and Schner.
  • A pair of kills from Schner were followed by contributions for Iona Nelson, Currie, Fishbach and Thomas to get within just one 15-14.
  • Single markers by Fishbach and Thomas would not be enough for the Red and White as the Jackets closed out the 25-17 win.
Fourth Set
  • Once again Dickinson found themselves behind early 8-4 as kills from Schner and Williams accounted for the DC tallies.
  • Two kills each for Currie and Cusson along with an ace by Butcher and tally from Fishbach cut the deficit to 11-10.
  • Dickinson attempted to battle back as kills off the hands of Currie and Thomas left the Devils behind by two 17-15.
  • Following an ace by Mullens that made it 19-15, solo markers for Maisy Naff, Cusson and Schner brought the score to 20-19 DC.
  • However, the Yellow Jackets ended the match on a 6-2 spurt for the 25-22 victory.
