COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Dickinson football team put up 21 points in the second quarter and held Ursinus College scoreless over the final three periods to earn a 31-7 Centennial Conference win on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field. Ben Klassen threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns, while Dane Sorensen and Jake Williams both topped the century mark on the ground as the Red and White piled up 553 yards of total offense.
First Quarter
- Dickinson went right to work on the opening possession as Klassen found Sorensen for 17 yards and Frederik Fjeldseth for seven to move into Ursinus territory. Sorensen followed with runs of 24 and 12 yards to reach the UC10. The Bears held at the four, bringing on Hudson Reese for a 21-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead with 10:57 remaining.
- Ursinus answered with a 13-play, 78-yard march as Tristan Machado connected with Aidan Donahue for 21 yards and Danny Gies for 16 to reach the DC25. Jason Bernard handled the final four carries, punching it in from one yard out to give the hosts a 7-3 advantage with 4:09 left (Ben Kiedrowski kick).
- Klassen found Gavin Hutz for 47 yards on the ensuing possession, but Andy Zigbuo intercepted the next pass at the UC1 and returned it to the 25. The Dickinson defense forced a three-and-out, and the Devils were back in Ursinus territory by the end of the quarter thanks to a 17-yard strike to Aiden Civitala.
Second Quarter
- Sorensen opened the period with runs of five and six yards to move the ball to the UC34. Klassen then found Kevin Schmidt down the middle for a 34-yard touchdown to put Dickinson back in front, 10-7, with 13:57 remaining (Reese kick).
- After another three-and-out by the Bears, the Red and White went 75 yards in ten plays. Klassen found Williams for 12 yards and Fjeldseth for 17, before a three-yard completion to Schmidt moved the chains at the UC23. Sorensen took it from there, gaining nine yards up the middle before scoring from 14 yards out to make it 17-7 with 9:17 left (Reese kick).
- The Bears threatened to cut into the deficit as Machado found Ryder Zulkowski for 24 yards and ran for nine more to the DC11. Facing fourth-and-one, Ursinus went to Devon Green up the middle, but Jimmy Mulholland stopped him for no gain to give the ball back to Dickinson with 3:33 remaining.
- The Devils turned the stop into a 15-play, 89-yard touchdown drive. Williams opened the march with carries of nine and five yards, while Klassen found Fjeldseth for 16 and Sorensen for 17 to move into scoring range. After a false start backed Dickinson up to the UC18, Klassen connected with Sorensen for 16 yards and then hit Fjeldseth for a two-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left (Reese kick).
- Ursinus used completions to Donahue and Jake Van Orden to give Kiedrowski a chance from 52 yards as time expired. The kick missed, sending the Red and White into the break with a 24-7 lead.
Third Quarter
- Marco Kaufman and Juan Pablo Garcia combined to drop Green for a four-yard loss on the opening possession of the half, helping Dickinson force another punt.
- The Devils held the ball for 7:18 on their first drive of the period, moving from their own 16 to the UC27 on a 13-yard Williams carry. A loss and a penalty pushed the offense back, and although Williams got Dickinson back to the 25 with a 12-yard reception, a fourth-down pass fell incomplete.
- Ursinus drove to the DC10 behind completions to Daniel Painter, Van Orden and Zulkowski. However, Machado's fourth-and-two pass intended for Van Orden fell incomplete, ending another Bears scoring threat with 1:21 left in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- Dickinson turned that stop into a 90-yard scoring march. Sorensen converted third-and-one to open the period and broke loose for 32 yards on the next play. Klassen found Schmidt for 17 to the UC26, before Williams carried four straight times and finished the drive with a five-yard touchdown to make it 31-7 with 10:51 remaining (Reese kick).
- Domani White ended the next Ursinus possession with a 12-yard sack of Machado on fourth down, giving Dickinson the ball at the UC24.
- The Bears got it back when Nakai Robinson stopped Williams short of the marker on a fourth-down reception.Ursinus made one last push as Bernard broke off a 16-yard run to the DC33. Adam Kilpatrick then intercepted Justin Shepherd at the DC9 with 1:55 remaining. Giovanni Del Re picked up a first down on two carries, allowing the Devils to run out the clock on the 31-7 win.
