CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team braved the rain and some some snow flurries on Sunday afternoon to battle the tenth-ranked Denison University at Biddle Field. Unfortunately for the Red and White, the visitors got out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter and never looked back posting a 9-4 non-conference win.
First Quarter
- Denison came out of the gates flying as three straight draw control victories for Mary Martinson led to markers from Finlay Harmon, Grayson O'Marra and Martinson making it 3-0 with five minutes gone.
- It would take all the way until the nine minute mark for Dickinson to record their opening shot when Sage Whiteside missed the target. That was followed by chances for Eva Gardner and Bella Guckes that did not test goalie Julianne Henigan.
- Late in the period the home team would have an opportunity to get on the scoreboard as Alex Hackett popped the ball free from Anie Savarese, but the resulting possession ended with Heidi Schmidt being turned aside by Henigan.
Second Quarter
- An early stop by Peyton VanDorpe set the stage for the Devils to go back down the other way allowing Whiteside to connect with Guckes for the first of the day (3-1).
- That goal seem to bring the Big Red's offense back to attention as they used a two minute stretch to grab three more goals to make it 6-1 with 8:22 left.
- After killing off a pair of yellow cards, Dickinson got shots from both Ali Broome and Whiteside that hit the post and were saved respectively.Â
- Sydney Lavin notched a late tally to give the visitors a 7-1 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter
- To open up the period Brynna O'Brien took over between the pipes for the Devils and she immediately watched the offense record five shots thanks to Quinn Foa, Gardner and Schmidt. Unfortunately, a pair of Henigan saves helped keep the score where it was.
- The Big Red recorded the ensuing four shots which resulted in one goal to up the margin to 8-1 with nine minutes remaining.Â
- Coming out of a Denison timeout Kaylyn Kirrane replaced Henigan in cage and would give up a goal to Quinn Foa on her first shot faced.Â
- Dickinson's defense tried to keep things within reach going to the fourth with Mia Snellenburg and Broome causing turnovers, while O'Brien shut the door on Lavin.
Fourth Quarter
- Neither side was able to get much going offensively over the first six minutes as the teams combined for just two shots during that stretch.
- Shots by Gardner and Kelly were each denied by Kirrane which allowed Finlay Harmon to find the back of the cage making it 9-2.
- The duo of Geary and Guckes picked up unassisted tallies over the remainder of the period to set the 9-4 final.
