Devils Gallop Past Blazers in Season Opening Sweep

FREDERICK, Md. - Led by dominant outings in the circle for Emory Hadden, Abby Kohan and Kaylie Renner, the Dickinson softball team began the 2026 season with doubleheader sweep of the host Hood College on Saturday afternoon at the Hood Softball Field. The Red and White had the sticks out in the first game posting an 8-1 win, before notching a tight 2-1 win during game two.

Game One
Final Score - DEVILS 8, Blazers 1
Records - DEVILS 1-0 | Hood 0-3
Pitching Decision - W - Abby Kohan (1-0) | L - Taylor Lowe (0-2)

Inside the Game
  • Pitching was the name of the game early as Lowe allowed a base runner in each of the first to runs but did not allow either to cross, while Kohan was excellent retiring the first six she faced.
  • Following a "three-up, three-down" top of the third, Hood would use a single for Anna Sommerkamp and a DC error allowing Hanna Janke to reach to have two on with two gone. However, Kohan barred down and got Kara Heidlauf to groundout to first for the final out.
  • Dickinson rode the momentum of Kohan's pitching to the first runs of the game during the fourth. A leadoff walk to Jane Lloyd was followed by a pair of strikeouts for Erin McMahon and Amelia Pescia bringing up Aubrey Coyle. She then notched her first collegiate RBI driving home Lloyd with a double. Next, was Alex Johnson who made it 2-0 with an RBI single. Kohan would record a a shutdown home-half of the fourth to keep the score 2-0.
  • Three straight one out knocks for Erin Eltzholtz, Jessie Sandusky and Lloyd filled the bags. After Plescia popped up to second, McMahon hammered a bases clearing double to left pushing the gap to 5-0. Hood pulled one back during the last of the fifth thanks to three singles off of Kohan.
  • With one away in the sixth, a single for Kohan and free pass worked by Elizabeth Raefski set the stage for a two-run single to left from Sandusky extending the lead to 7-1. Dickinson added one more in the final frame with doubles for McMahon and Johnson supplying the offense. Kohan returned to the circle looking to finish off the complete game, which she did getting a flyout, groundout and strikeout of Sydney Weaver to end the game.

Inside the Game
  • Neither side was able to get much going in the first two innings as the game remained scoreless entering the third.
  • In the top half of the frame, a single for Kohan and two-bagger from Gilbert had two in scoring position with one down. Unfortunately, a popout and lineout retired the side. The Blazers picked up two singles during the bottom portion, but a strikeout of Lowe prevented any damage.
  • The fifth opened up for the Red and White with both Raefski and Gilbert being setdown. That brought Sandusky to the box and she smacked a double to left, before being brought home when Lloyd followed her with a single. Plescia would then groundout to third for the final out. It would become 2-0 an inning later when Marah Goldman reached on a fielder's choice followed by an RBI knock to center off the bat of Kohan.
  • Renner who had been excellent in the circle through the first five innings ran into some trouble during the sixth when with two gone a single and two walks loaded the bags for Bailey Pysher. In the middle of her at-bat a passed ball allowed one to come home cutting it down to 2-1 heading to the seventh.
  • Hadden nailed down the save for Renner with a one-two-three last of the seventh.
